Job description

We are seeking a motivated and hands-on supervisor who can inspire and guide our Maintenance Team while actively contributing to the upkeep of Taunton’s public spaces and council assets. You’ll combine strong supervisory skills with practical maintenance expertise, ensuring repairs and improvements across town council premises, parks, play areas, and public conveniences. Working closely with the Maintenance Lead, you’ll champion safety, cleanliness, and community engagement, while being a visible and approachable presence for residents, visitors, and businesses.

Main duties of the role include:

  • To carry out routine litter picking and rubbish disposal activity in our parks and open spaces.
  • To assist with the opening and closing of public conveniences and cleaning of the facilities.
  • To complete weekly playground inspections and complete maintenance where necessary.
  • To follow risk assessments for all activities where necessary.
  • Regularly carry out and record inspections of street furniture, signage or other assets in all open spaces and report any damage as appropriate, undertaking cleaning and appropriate maintenance as required.
  • Be proactive and have a ‘can do’ attitude when presented with graffiti, vandalism, flyposting, or a general untidy appearance across the parish and complete or arrange the necessary removal and cleaning and report repairs ton
  • Identify areas of fly tipping and littering and remove and dispose of where possible, reporting to the relevant outside body where fly tipped items or litter are hazardous or of greater size or volume than can be dealt with.
  • Undertake grounds maintenance, including planting, minor landscaping works and weed clearance/spraying, leaf collecting within the town council allotments parks and open spaces and on areas within the town and council property as directed.
  • Inspect the public rights of way in the Taunton areas on a regular basis, cutting back brambles and weeds to ensure that the paths are always usable. Make minor repairs and where possible complete landscaping works to keep these areas looking their best.
  • Work flexibly with the team to agree work schedules and to prioritise workload, undertaking tasks as instructed to meet the parks and open spaces objectives identified by the council.
  • Use the council’s IT to monitor assets, keep records, to receive job sheets and report matters that need escalating.
  • Ensure the council’s tools and vehicles are kept clean and in good order, undertaking regular vehicle and equipment maintenance tasks.
  • Attend and/or assist with the delivery of town council events & activities and set up equipment and furniture where necessary. Occasional evening working might be required to facilitate.
  • Always promote and uphold a positive image of the town council, forging good professional relationships with elected members and officers and providing a highly visible and approachable service to maximise opportunities for positive engagement. Town council branded uniform and suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) will be supplied and must be worn when on duty.
  • Identify opportunities to work with volunteers or other bodies and be prepared to lead volunteer groups in grounds tasks and at events.
  • Participate in a rota system to provide weekend cover, ensuring the delivery of maintenance services across council assets, open spaces and facilities.
  • Be first aid trained and complete all works with health and safety in mind, ensuring risk assessments & method statements are followed and PPE is worn where necessary and that hygiene and cross-contamination is always considered.
  • Ensure understanding, compliance and cooperation with the policies, procedures, strategic plans, and any other directives of the town council.
Leadership and Team Management
  • To supervise, motivate, coach and lead by example Council’s Maintenance team ensuring effective collaboration and performance to ensure the Town Council Assets are maintained and repaired as and when required. A pro‑active approach.
