Job description
Role Title: Maintenance Engineer Apprentice

Location: Scarborough (On-Site)

Apprentice Level: UK Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship Programme

Salary: £20,000

Role Mission

As a Maintenance Engineer Apprentice you will optimize operational performance through proactive/reactive maintenance techniques. This is to ensure that safety is secured through the adoption of safe working practices and the provision of safe plant and equipment, whilst also providing on‑rota call‑out cover in support of the factory reactive breakdowns.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure safety and integrity of all plant and equipment.
  • Support continuous improvement and site projects.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and manage spare parts inventory.
  • Monitor key performance metrics (MTTR, MTBF, service schedules).
  • Respond to breakdowns quickly using fault‑finding techniques to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain site facilities and oversee subcontractor safety.
  • Train and implement autonomous maintenance practices.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures in all activities.
Training

During your apprenticeship, you will receive two different types of training.

On‑the‑job Training and wellbeing support
  • Feedback opportunities
  • Off‑the‑job Training

    ‘Off‑the‑job’ training is delivered by one of our carefully selected Training Providers during your normal working hours. You will spend at least 20% (average 6 hours per week) of your working hours completing ‘off‑the‑job’ training. This is protected time and is a requirement for apprenticeship delivery. This training will teach you the knowledge, skills, and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard so you can achieve occupational competence.

    Work Pattern

    37.5 hours per week to be worked from Monday to Friday. Exact start and finish times are to be agreed upon with Line Manager. Some of these hours will be allocated to off‑the‑job training as part of your Apprenticeship Programme.

    Monday to Thursday: 07:55 to 16:25

    Friday 07:55 to 13:25

    Skills and Attributes
    Essential
    • Demonstrable interest in engineering
    • Basic PC literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office or equivalent software.
    • Ability to work accurately and efficiently, meeting deadlines.
    • Strong teamwork and communication skills for effective collaboration.(Verbal and written English)
    • Aptitude for practical science or engineering tasks.
    Desirable
    • Problem-solving and fault‑finding ability to minimize downtime.
    • Organizational skills for managing spares and maintenance records.
    • Flexibility and dependability to adapt to changing priorities.
    • Motivation and willingness to learn, with a good attendance record.Mechanical aptitude.
    • Understanding of health & safety practices in an industrial environment.
    Education

    A minimum of 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent), at Grade 4 or above including Maths, English and a science related subject.

    Previous Experience Required

    No pre‑requisite experience required but a demonstrable interest in engineering through school or hobby interests.
