Job description

We are looking to recruit an experienced band 6 leg ulcer nurse 0.6 WTE (3 days a week) to support our new, proactive Specialist Leg Ulcer Service across Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust. This role requires a nurse with a broad knowledge of leg ulcer assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. The applicant must be a car driver with the ability to travel between clinic sites.

The post carries responsibility for providing clinical support to the leg ulcer service, ensuring a high standard of care is given in conjunction with the clinical leads and team. The post holder will ensure that a high standard of leg ulcer care is achieved and maintained.

This role will support the clinical leads in delivering a specialist leg ulcer service within east and north Hertfordshire. They will support primary care, community nursing and nursing homes with specialist leg ulcer assessment and management.

Excellent interpersonal skills are required, as in addition to patient involvement, service management and development. The successful candidate will also be involved in the teaching, education and training of others in the management of leg ulcers working alongside the lymphoedema and tissue viability specialist nursing teams.

A full valid driving licence and access to a car to use regularly for business purposes is essential (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the clinical leads to manage the nurse‑led leg ulcer service, meeting the needs of patients within the contracted localities. This includes triaging referrals, monitoring/managing waiting lists and assessing patients in line with contracted requirements.
  • Support the clinical leads in the provision of the necessary training for nurses within Hertfordshire in evidence‑based leg ulcer management through the development, implementation and evaluation of theoretical and practical training programmes as appropriate.
  • Promote a leg ulcer service philosophy which embraces a holistic approach to patients, relatives and carers.
  • Take responsibility for coordinating the delivery of localised specialised leg ulcer care as required by the service.
  • Monitor and support all grades of community staff working within leg ulcer clinics.
  • Support the practice development of other nurses within GP surgeries, community and nursing homes.
  • Act as a resource and ensure continuation of appropriate leg ulcer care for patients in other environments e.g. home, hospital.
