Job description
About the Role

Ready to lead engineering excellence at one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects? Want to shape the future of nuclear energy and help Britain achieve net zero? At EDF, Success is Personal - and with us, your career journey is yours to shape.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Lifting and Handling Engineer to lead technical aspects of the design, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and safety case development of cranes and lifting equipment, together with fuelling equipment, within a highly regulated environment. This role is critical to ensuring safe and compliant lifting operations across complex projects involving radioactive materials, hazardous environments, or sensitive assets.

You will be responsible for providing expert engineering support, leading safety case development, and ensuring compliance with national and international standards. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including safety engineers, project managers, and regulatory bodies. The role will include technical management of key issues, supervising a team of lifting and handling engineers.

You'll join us on a competitive salary. This is a hybrid role based at #GloucesterBusinessPark with flexibility to work from home - though you'll be expected in the office at least three days a week.

This is your chance to work at the forefront of complex engineering challenges that safeguard people and assets.

Who You Are

We're looking for a Lead Lifting and Handling Engineer who is safety focused and collaborative. Do you offer

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Significant experience in lifting and handling engineering within highly regulated industries such as nuclear, defence or aerospace.
  • Proven ability to develop safety cases and engage effectively with regulators.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including but not limited to:
    • BS EN 13001 - Cranes, General Design
    • FEM - General Principles for the design of cranes
    • KTA 3902 - Design of Lifting Equipment in Nuclear Power Plants
    • LOLER 1998 - Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations
    • PUWER 1998 - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
    • Construction Design Management (CDM)
  • Strong understanding of structural integrity, fatigue analysis and mechanical design principles.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to influence and manage diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience with remote handling systems or robotic lifting solutions.
  • Familiarity with nuclear site licence conditions and safety documentation.
  • Experience in lifting operations involving radioactive or hazardous materials.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Leading the design and specification of lifting and handling systems, from overhead cranes and hoists to bespoke solutions and fuel handling equipment.
  • Developing and maintaining safety cases and technical justifications for lifting operations in regulated environments.
  • Overseeing inspection, maintenance, and ensuring operational readiness of lifting equipment.
  • Conducting risk assessments, ALARP evaluations, and supporting HAZOP/HAZAN or similar safety case studies.
  • Interfacing with regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with legislation and industry standards.
  • Providing mentoring and technical leadership to junior engineers and wider project teams.
  • Supporting procurement, installation, commissioning, and lifecycle management of lifting systems.
Pay, Benefits and Culture

Alongside a competitive salary, potential for an annual bonus, and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days, and more.
