The M40 motorway is just over 123 km (about 76.43 mi) long, linking London and the M25 with Birmingham, with high traffic levels ranging from 90,000 to 140,000 daily. The contract is for routine O&M services, and provision of a dedicated incident response unit. There are 110+ staff across 3 depots. The contract also includes the management of road incidents, road availability / road‑space bookings, and running Network Control Centre NCC.

About the Role
Mission & Main Activities

Reporting to the ERO M40 Landscape and Ecology (L&E) Manager, the L&E Works Team Lead will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of planned day and nighttime works for our internal teams. The L&E Works Team Lead will oversee the efficient delivery of works, and compliance with safety and quality standards. This role ensures that planned works are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards, while minimising disruption to traffic and local communities. The L&E Works Team Lead will coordinate resources and liaise with the L&E Manager, Night Works Manager and Day Works Manager to ensure completion and sign off all nighttime works. The role will ensure that health, safety, quality, and environmental standards are maintained, and compliance with Egis codes of ethics and conduct.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure all activities are completed safely in compliance with the company’s health, safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Undertake regular site inspections and safety audits to identify all risks and remove or mitigate against.
  • Active participation in the delivery of safety briefings, toolbox talks, and learning discussions.
  • Oversee, supervise, and participate in the delivery of landscape and ecology works, ensuring that all works are completed satisfactorily, and all relevant works documents are completed and filed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure accurate records of completed works and that they are input in a timely and contractual manner. Ensure that any failure works are reported back to the L&E Planning and Delivery Manager for re‑planning.
  • Support the process that identifies the levels of competence required to deliver the service and communicate these back to the L&E Planning and Delivery Manager.
  • Identify and communicate appropriate training requirements for operatives to the L&E Planning Manager and Delivery Manager.
  • Ensure that all works comply with wildlife legislations including but not exclusive to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 & Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017.
  • Investigate incidents and near‑mises, documenting findings, implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence and escalating findings to ensure lessons learnt are captured.
  • Monitor work to ensure compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and contractual obligations.
  • Proactively identify and address and/or escalate any defects or non‑conformances to the L&E Planning and Delivery Manager.
  • Ensure all necessary permits and approvals are available prior to commencement of night works. Stay informed about relevant regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Report any issues with fleet or plant to the Day Works Manager, Night Works Manager or L&E Planning and Delivery Manager, and provide support in rectifying issues where required, whilst looking for ways to innovate and provide a better service.
  • Ensure all plant used by the L&E team is maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and any defects are reported to the Day Works Manager.
  • Provide timely information and feedback as required by ERO M40 Management for reporting purposes.
  • Promote and develop teamwork and positive work attitudes.
  • Behave in a manner to promote collaboration and fairness, and to foster a positive work environment, improving morale of the workforce.
  • Develop and maintain a good working relationship with our client and partners.
  • Work closely with other departments and contractors to facilitate works.
  • To assist where necessary with the creation of works pack, including briefings and permits.
  • To assist where necessary in the supervision of sub‑contractors, monitoring performance to ensure adherence to contractual obligations and project timelines. Ensuring that they are working in a safe manner, in accordance with the CDM pack.
  • To fully engage with the promotion and adoption of any current and future health, safety and wellbeing initiatives rolled out by Egis Road operation M40 Ltd and/or Egis UK.
  • To carry our other such related duties as maybe required.
What we need from you
Ideal Candidate Will Possess
  • Proven track record as a Site Team Lead on high-speed road projects.
  • Current CSCS Supervisor card, SSSTS/SMSTS.
  • Strong understanding of landscape & ecology principles, including best practice and ecological constrictions.
  • A demonstrable ability to identify areas for improvement, and implement change, through a combination of clear and effective communication, and a drive to succeed.
  • Considerable and demonstrable experience of a high regard to safety and quality on a high-speed strategic road network.
  • Strong ability to lead teams effectively, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Capability in making informed decisions under pressure, ensuring timely resolution of issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Flexible approach to managing changing priorities and working conditions during night‑time hours.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Safe use of hedge cutter, strimmer, chipper, blower.
  • Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross‑Cutting 0020‑03 or CS30.
  • Level 2 Award in Felling & Processing Trees up to 380 mm 0020‑04 or CS31 minimum.
  • Level 2 Award in using a Powered Pole Pruner – NPORS 360 Degrees Below 10 Tonnes.
