Job description
Human Resources Officer (College Education Sector)

We're recruiting a Human Resources Officer to deliver a proactive, high-quality HR service in a fast-paced education college environment. You'll work closely with managers to support the people agenda, ensuring HR processes are compliant, consistent, and commercially sensible—while helping the organisation deliver its wider HR strategy.

The role

You'll provide hands‑on support across the full HR lifecycle, with a strong focus on employee relations, recruitment, and absence management. This is an operational, high‑volume role for someone who enjoys variety, pace, and making things happen.

Key responsibilities 🧩
  • Own and support employee relations (ER) casework end‑to‑end: disciplinaries, grievances, capability, investigations and appeals
  • Draft sharp, compliant ER paperwork ✍️ — invites, outcome letters, warnings, meeting notes and all formal correspondence
  • Coach managers on the best route: informal resolution where possible, and clear guidance on when a matter needs to go formal
  • Build robust hearing packs 📁 — witness statements, evidence bundles and supporting documents (including for external claims/tribunals where needed)
  • Run end‑to‑end recruitment: keep candidate experience strong and deliver agreed recruitment SLAs
  • Liaise with agencies/advertisers to secure quality attraction at competitive cost
  • Support interviews/assessments ✅ — administer tests where required, ensure process compliance, and coordinate feedback to candidates/managers
  • Lead absence management: health review meetings, early intervention, and timely Occupational Health referrals
  • Keep HR audit‑ready at all times (contracts, references, right to work, qualifications, and HR records for inspection readiness)
  • Maintain accurate HR system records across starters, leavers, changes, sickness, ER and training
  • Get involved in wider HR projects, initiatives, and manager briefings/training as needed
What we're looking for 🔎
  • HR experience in a high‑volume, deadline‑driven environment
  • Strong working knowledge of UK employment law and practical HR best practice
  • Confident handling complex ER and advising managers with clarity and credibility
  • Solid end‑to‑end recruitment experience, with strong process control and candidate communication
  • Experience managing absence processes, including Occupational Health coordination
  • Excellent written skills — able to produce clear, accurate, legally compliant HR documentation
  • Strong IT skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and confidence using HR systems
  • Organised, professional and discreet — able to juggle priorities and work independently
Qualifications & compliance
  • CIPD qualified / graduate qualified (or willing to work towards)
  • This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS and safeguarding requirements
