Overview

Hybrid working, 3 days per week on site

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through close partnerships with governments, global institutions, non-profit and private organisations we aim to promote improved health, particularly for people in the least developed countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.

We are looking for someone to join our People Services team, to provide advice and guidance to Line Managers and staff on a range of people related matters, from basic cases through to more complex situations. The role will have specific responsibility for employee relations cases, policy and procedures development, while also leading on wellbeing initiatives and using workforce data to inform decision-making. This is a pivotal role ensuring our workplace remains fair, inclusive, and compliant.

Responsibilities
  • Managing core ER processes including disciplinary, grievance, performance, redundancy, and more
  • Providing expert advice to managers and staff on employment legislation, policies, and best practice
  • Responsible for policy creation, review, and implementation to ensure compliance and clarity
  • Where appropriate, leading on complex ER cases, ensuring timely, fair, and effective resolution
  • Supporting UKVI compliance and advising on visas and immigration matters
  • Championing wellbeing initiatives and contributing to our Welfare Strategy
  • Analysing HR data and case trends to recommend proactive interventions
The ideal candidate will bring
  • MCIPD or equivalent professional qualification
  • Extensive knowledge of UK employment and equality legislation
  • Proven experience in managing complex ER cases
  • Strong communication, influencing, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to analyse HR data, draw insights, and make evidence-based recommendations
  • Flexible, pragmatic, and able to work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines

Previous experience within a higher education setting would be advantageous, but is not essential.
