Qualifications

  • Full UK Driving Licence – C2 Licence is required.
  • Previous experience in routine maintenance.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond appropriately to crisis situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with empathy & professionalism.
  • Physically fit.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety procedures relating to roadside and public safety.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Respond to incidents such as road damage, debris clearance, or weather-related hazards.
  • Work as part of a team to deliver planned and reactive works efficiently.
  • Daily security patrols for both bridge areas and depot/office locations.
  • Undertake winter maintenance duties.
  • Attend to incidents where members of the public may be at risk of self-harm.

Highway Maintenance Operative with HGV Licence

Location: South Queensferry

Full Time / Permanent, 40 Hours per week, Monday – Friday, OT & On Call Rota

BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,00km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving.

The South East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. Trunk roads in the South East range from the major multi-lane motorways across the central belt to roads through villages in the borders.

The South East Unit includes 870 bridges and structures including the iconic Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, as well as other major bridges such as the Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge.

We have vacancies for Highway Maintenance Operatives with a HGV Licence to join our existing operations team. The Highway Maintenance Operative will be responsible for routine and preventative maintenance in our South Queensferry Depot.

This role also includes acting as a responder to incidents involving individuals in distress at, working alongside emergency services to safeguard life and public safety.

This is a full-time role with Standby Rota and Overtime available.

Road and Infrastructure Responsibilities
  • Carry out routine maintenance and preventative maintenance such as external and internal office maintenance, cleansing activities and ground maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Respond to incidents such as road damage, debris clearance, or weather‑related hazards.
  • Work as part of a team to deliver planned and reactive works efficiently.
  • Daily security patrols for both bridge areas and depot/office locations.
  • Undertake winter maintenance duties.
Suicide Prevention & Public Safety Duties
  • Attend to incidents where members of the public may be at risk of self‑harm.
  • Approach individuals in distress calmly, safely and respectfully.
  • Immediately notify and liaise with emergency services & BEAR Scotland Network Hub as required.
  • Always ensure own safety and that of your colleagues and the public.
  • Record and report all incidents in line with company and contractual situations.

Specialist training in suicide awareness and crisis intervention (ASIST / Mental Health) will be provided.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Full UK Driving Licence – C2 Licence is required.
  • Previous experience in routine maintenance.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond appropriately to crisis situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with empathy & professionalism.
  • Physically fit.
  • Previous experience of working alongside Emergency Services (Desirable).
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety procedures relating to roadside and public safety.
