Job description

The Group Director, Automated Build & Deployment Systems, will serve as a senior individual contributor responsible for designing, architecting, and delivering a fully automated, scalable build and deployment mechanism to modernize application installations across a large enterprise server estate (50,000+ servers). This role requires deep technical expertise, hands‑on engineering capability, and strong leadership influence without direct people management.

The successful candidate will drive the end‑to‑end technical strategy and implementation of a next‑generation automation framework that dramatically reduces the cost of maintenance, improves fleet consistency, and accelerates delivery across diverse operating systems and application environments.

Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Strategy
  • Define the target‑state architecture for an automated build and deployment system supporting large‑scale OS and application modernization.
  • Develop a multi‑year technical roadmap that aligns with enterprise modernization initiatives, operational resiliency, and cost‑reduction goals.
  • Evaluate and introduce modern automation tooling, frameworks, and patterns.
  • Set enterprise‑wide standards for build, deploy, test, and release automation.
Hands‑On Engineering
  • Lead the design and development of automated build pipelines, deployment mechanisms, and OS/application provisioning systems.
  • Build repeatable, testable automation workflows that reduce manual operational effort across tens of thousands of servers.
  • Develop reusable libraries and frameworks for automation teams.
  • Implement CI/CD patterns tailored for system software and OS‑level components.
  • Write high‑quality, secure, and maintainable code.
Operational Excellence
  • Ensure automation solutions support reliability, scale, auditability, and security requirements.
  • Implement telemetry, monitoring, and KPIs for automation health and performance.
  • Partner with operations teams to transition solutions into production.
  • Drive incident reduction and improved fleet consistency.
Stakeholder Leadership & Influence
  • Act as the senior technical authority and thought leader.
  • Influence senior technology leaders, architects, and platform owners.
  • Collaborate with security, compliance, and risk teams.
  • Mentor engineering teams and promote automation best practices.
Technical Expertise
  • 10+ years engineering experience with deep expertise in software development and SDLC.
  • Proven experience building automation systems for OS‑level deployments or large‑scale infrastructure.
  • Strong proficiency in languages such as Python, Go, Java, or PowerShell.
  • Expertise with CI/CD platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge of IaC and configuration management tools.
  • Strong understanding of OS lifecycle management.
  • Experience with large distributed environments.
  • Knowledge of security requirements for system deployments.
  • Containerization experience is a plus.
Leadership & Influence
  • Ability to operate as a senior individual contributor with enterprise‑wide influence.
