GIS Technician - Aquaculture

Department : Geospatial Analysis & Environmental Planning

Reports to : Senior GIS Analyst

Employment Type : Full-time (remote)

Position Overview

We are seeking an entry-level GIS Technician to support our aquaculture operations through geospatial data analysis, mapping, and technical assistance. The successful candidate will work closely with our environmental science and operations teams to analyse site conditions, monitor environmental parameters, and create detailed maps and visualisations that support sustainable aquaculture practices.

Key Responsibilities
Data Management & Analysis
  • Collect, process, and maintain geospatial data related to aquaculture sites, water quality, and environmental conditions
  • Create and update GIS databases for farm locations, equipment placement, and environmental monitoring stations
  • Perform spatial analysis to assess site suitability for aquaculture operations
  • Generate regular reports on water quality parameters, bathymetry, and environmental conditions
Mapping & Visualization
  • Produce high-quality maps, charts, and technical drawings for internal and regulatory use
  • Create visualisations of farm layouts, lease boundaries, and environmental monitoring networks
  • Develop web-based mapping applications for field staff and management teams
  • Maintain cartographic standards and ensure all maps meet regulatory requirements
Technical Support
  • Assist field teams with GPS data collection and mobile GIS applications
  • Support environmental monitoring programs through data visualization and analysis
  • Collaborate with biologists and farm managers to optimize site layouts and operations
  • Participate in field surveys and data collection activities as needed
Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain detailed documentation of GIS workflows and data sources
  • Ensure all geospatial products meet industry standards and regulatory requirements
  • Assist with permit applications and environmental impact assessments
  • Support compliance reporting through spatial analysis and mapping
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Marine Science, or related field
  • 0-4 years of professional GIS experience
  • Coursework or internship experience with GIS software and spatial analysis
Technical Skills

Proficiency in QGIS, ESRI ArcGIS Desktop, and ArcGIS Online.

Basic understanding of spatial databases and data formats (shapefiles, geodatabases, rasters).

Familiarity with GPS equipment and data collection methods.

Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Excellent attention to detail and data quality control.
