Job description

As a Graduate Safety Case Engineer, you will support the development and maintenance of safety cases across UKAEA facilities, working closely with experienced Safety Case Engineers, ATO holders, and the Chief Engineer function to assess the fitness for service of safety‑related equipment.

You will assist in evaluating proposed modifications, learn how safety advice is provided to designers, and engage with external peer reviewers who provide independent assurance of the effectiveness of UKAEA's safety cases and safety arguments.

Core Responsibilities
  • Collect technical information and coordinate expertise from within UKAEA and from external specialist service providers; support lead Safety Case authors to deliver Safety Case and Safety Engineering activities.
  • Support Safety Case authors to prepare Safety Cases for UKAEA facilities; collate information from those managing the facility, Health Physics, Waste management and Safety Group, and prepare for and support running HAZOP meetings and output reports. Work with the Safety Case author to select and summarize information relevant to the safety case using methods such as probabilistic risk assessment and selecting appropriate values for use in modelling equations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of Safety Case documents in support of plant modifications and operations. Collect information from the RO for the modification and from the facility manager. Review the existing safety case and determine whether the safety limits are being challenged.
  • Conduct technical assessments in support of the Safety Case, researching assessment methods and proposing a methodology.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Science or Engineering expected by 2025 or 2026.
  • Confident with all Microsoft applications including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Driven, with a strong appetite to learn, research, investigate, and take on new challenges.
  • Able to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Well organised and adaptable with the ability to plan and prioritise workload.
Benefits
  • £35,227 base salary
  • Final salary defined benefit scheme with an equivalent of 21.5% employer pension contribution
  • 25 days annual leave, plus 3 days Christmas closure and 2.5 privilege days, and UK bank holidays.
  • Flexible and hybrid working options.
