Job description
Overview

Are you interested in a role with flexible working hours, opportunities to meet people from diverse communities, and a positive impact on your local community? The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering key economic, social and demographic topics. These include measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating the population size and characteristics, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime and migration. This is an exciting opportunity to join a modern, innovative and inclusive team that sits at the heart of public service delivery.

Role

This is a great opportunity to join our team as a Field Interviewer working for the Office for National Statistics via AMS. As a Field Interviewer carrying out official surveys you will help inform government about the state of the nation.

The role will start with five weeks of comprehensive training to ensure your success. The Field Interviewer role involves visiting sampled addresses to encourage survey participation and interviewing respondents in their homes. This role is not office based. You are required to work within a 40-mile radius (approx.) of an allocated location. Work will be allocated to ensure you can travel and complete your tasks within your contracted hours in this area. Consider how your home location compares to your chosen location preference when applying.

This role offers flexible working hours broadly equivalent to 22 hours per week. Interviews will need to be conducted between 09:00 and 20:00, with potential for admin and travel time outside of these hours. Interviewers will work across mornings, afternoons and evenings and are contracted to work Monday to Saturday.

Responsibilities
  • Visit sampled addresses to encourage survey completion and interview respondents in their homes.
  • Plan, organise and manage your own workload with full training and ongoing support.
  • Travel within a 40-mile radius from the allocated location and transport equipment (e.g., laptop and survey materials) as required.
  • Work within the hours of 09:00–20:00, splitting hours across mornings, afternoons and evenings, with some Saturday work if required.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Be able to transport and carry equipment, walk between addresses and navigate stairs when in the field.
  • Live within a 10-mile radius of the location and travel to addresses within a 40-mile radius from the advertised location.
  • Experience using a laptop and a smartphone.
  • Self-disciplined, self-motivated and able to work without supervision.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and enjoyment in meeting and talking to people.
  • Interviews will be conducted between 09:00–20:00, with hours split across mornings, afternoons and evenings; flexibility to work on Saturdays if required.
  • Full valid UK Driving Licence (including EU Nationals' rights) and full use of a car for work purposes including business use.
  • Proof of Identity and a broadband internet connection at your home address prior to taking up employment.
