Job description

Force Recruitment are working exclusively with a well‑established civil engineering and infrastructure contracting company in Lancashire to appoint a Civils Estimator. Our client delivers infrastructure, utilities and earthworks schemes across the North West and prides itself on quality, reliability and professionalism.

The Role

You will join the commercial team reporting into the Commercial Manager. Your core responsibility will be to produce accurate, competitive and commercially viable tender submissions for civil engineering and infrastructure projects—from initial scope review to tender submission and hand‑over into delivery. You will work closely with quantity surveyors, project managers, site engineers and the supply chain.

Key responsibilities include
  • Review and interpret drawings, specifications and contract documents to establish project scope.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates (labour, plant, materials, subcontractors) for civils works (e.g., drainage, highways, utility infrastructure, earthworks).
  • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain up‑to‑date pricing and maintain rate libraries.
  • Undertake risk assessments, carry out value engineering and provide clear tender commentary.
  • Prepare and submit tender documentation and support pre‑bid and post‑bid negotiations.
  • Maintain and update estimating databases, cost libraries and historical records.
  • Transition successful tenders into the delivery team and contribute to continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate will possess
  • Significant experience (typically 3‑5+ years) estimating within the civil engineering or infrastructure sector.
  • A strong understanding of civil works including drainage, highways, utilities, groundworks and reinstatement.
  • Ability to interpret 2D drawings and specifications; and a working knowledge of contract types.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel critical) and familiarity with estimating software (or willingness to learn).
  • Commercial awareness, excellent numeracy and communication skills.
  • A proactive, organised work style, with the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines simultaneously.
Desirable

HNC/HND/Degree in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying or related discipline; knowledge of NEC/JCT contracts; local market awareness in the North West.
