Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Prepare and support environmental reporting with specialist software.
  • Ensure site compliance with Environmental Permit conditions.
  • Coordinate with maintenance on Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems.
  • Oversee third-party contractors for emissions testing.
  • Conduct routine site inspections and internal audits.
  • Administer sampling schedules for laboratory reporting.

Job description

Astute's Power Team are looking for an Environmental Technician to join a large, modern Energy from Waste Power Station located in Bedfordshire. The facility, which is now in full time operation, provides a vital outlet for the sustainable disposal of over 545,000 tonnes of residual waste per year and will generate over 60 megawatts of low carbon energy – enough electricity to meet the needs of over 112,500 homes.

The successful applicant will provide support to the facility, ensuring environmental compliance inline with company policies & environmental legislation.

Responsibilities and duties of the Environmental Technician role
  • Assist in the development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of the Environmental Management System (EMS), including management of ISO 14001 certification and surveillance audits.
  • Prepare and support environmental reporting using specialist software, covering emissions to air, land and water in line with Environment Agency requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with Operations teams to ensure the site remains fully compliant with Environmental Permit conditions and applicable environmental legislation and guidance.
  • Support the EC&I team by coordinating with maintenance and service providers on Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and Computer Data Acquisition Systems (CDAS), ensuring compliance with BS EN 14181.
  • Oversee and support third‑party contractors carrying out periodic emissions testing and CEMS calibration activities.
  • Carry out routine site inspections and internal environmental audits and support the investigation and reporting of environmental incidents.
  • Assist with the administration of sampling schedules and laboratory reporting for Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) and Air Pollution Control Residue (APCR).
Professional qualifications
  • Ideally qualified with a degree in Environmental Science or a similar field.
  • Candidates with extensive work experience will also be considered.
  • It would be advantageous to hold an Auditor qualification.
  • As would an IOSH or NEBOSH qualification.
Personal skills
  • At least three years in a similar Environmental / Compliance position.
  • Competent working with MS Office Suite.
  • Able to read, analyse and interpret technical procedures & government regulations.
