Job description

Essex Council is seeking an experienced and driven Environmental Health Manager (Protection) to lead our busy, multi-skilled service on a temporary, full-time basis. This role offers an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal part in protecting and enhancing the environment for our residents, businesses, and visitors. You will be responsible for providing clear direction, setting service priorities, monitoring performance, and ensuring high-quality delivery across environmental health functions. The position combines both strategic oversight and operational responsibilities, including managing complex cases, offering expert technical advice, and taking formal enforcement action where necessary.
We are looking for a professional with significant experience in environmental health, ideally registered with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, and with at least two years' experience in line management. You should have excellent leadership skills, the ability to inspire and support your team, and a strong understanding of environmental health legislation. The role requires confident decision-making, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Experience in environmental protection services, problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, elected members, and external stakeholders will be essential.
In return, Essex Council offers flexible and remote working arrangements alongside access to modern council offices when required. You will be joining a forward-thinking organisation that values professionalism, teamwork, and delivering exceptional service to the community. We are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and welcome applications from all backgrounds. As a Disability Confident Leader, we guarantee interviews to applicants with disabilities, veterans, and care leavers who meet the minimum criteria for the role. This is a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference while enjoying a supportive and collaborative working environment.
