Job description
We're looking for an Engineering Projects Lead who can deliver high-quality Fleet Engineering projects that support GTR's wider business goals. You'll take ownership of key engineering initiatives, drive continuous improvement across our PMO processes, and ensure our engineering governance remains strong, effective, and aligned to business priorities.
What You'll Do

Deliver end-to-end, solutions-based Engineering Projects as prioritised by Fleet Engineering teams

Manage all stages of project development — from scope definition and stakeholder engagement to delivery and review

Maintain a strong focus on quality, service, and safety throughout every project

Develop and continuously improve governance processes within Engineering and E&AM — including:

GTR's Safety Risk Database (SRD) process

Mitigation and action tracking

Workload management and prioritisation

PMO processes that connect with wider GTR change and governance frameworks

Act as the key contact for all technical and safety aspects of materials and obsolescence management

Work with Supply Chain, Materials Managers, and Fleet Engineers to find practical solutions to obsolescence issues

Ensure investigations into technical matters meet required standards, providing clear and accurate data for safety and reliability analysis

Deliver compliant change in line with relevant legislation, standards, and company procedures

Identify and propose process or component improvements, preparing robust business cases for financial approval and timely implementation

Support fleet incident management, including participation in on-call duties when required

What You'll Bring
Knowledge and Experience

Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it via a recognised scheme) — ideally with a relevant Engineering degree

Strong understanding of modern rolling stock maintenance practices

Knowledge of rolling stock regulatory and standards frameworks

Excellent technical knowledge of train systems and components

Hands‑on experience working with traction and rolling stock

Experience in developing and managing engineering governance processes

Familiarity with Continuous Improvement methods and techniques

Proven ability to deliver complex engineering projects in a service delivery environment

Confidence managing stakeholders and delivering to customer or sponsor expectations

Skills

Strong numeracy, literacy, and IT skills (Word, Excel, Access)

Excellent organisational and prioritisation abilities

Clear communicator with great interpersonal and influencing skills

Analytical thinker able to use engineering first principles

Comfortable interpreting technical documentation and railway standards
