Job description

A fast‑growing UK clean‑energy start‑up is developing an innovative domestic thermal energy storage system. As they move from prototype to pre‑production, they are seeking an experienced Electronics & Embedded Systems Engineer to take ownership of the full control‑electronics design for a safety‑critical, mains‑powered appliance designed for UKCA/CE certification and future volume manufacture.

Key Responsibilities for Electronics & Embedded Systems Engineer
System Architecture
  • Define overall electrical & control system architecture
  • Select MCU / embedded platform (e.g. STM32, NXP, ESP32)
  • Develop power distribution & protection strategy
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, heaters & communication interfaces
PCB Design
  • Schematic capture & multi‑layer PCB layout
  • Industrial, manufacturable design (DFM/DFA principles)
  • Component selection with availability, cost & reliability in mind
  • Design for EMC, thermal performance, and safety compliance
Power Electronics & Safety
  • AC mains interfacing and load/heater control
  • Use of relays, SSRs or contactors as appropriate
  • Implement isolation, fusing, grounding & fault‑detection strategies
  • Design aligned with CE/UKCA safety and compliance requirements
Embedded Firmware
  • Develop firmware architecture and core control logic
  • Implement local/remote communications
  • Diagnostics, fault handling & firmware update strategy
Prototyping & Testing
  • Support prototype builds and system bring‑up
  • Hands‑on debugging & optimisation
  • Close collaboration with mechanical & systems engineering teams
Manufacturing & Compliance
  • Optimise design for manufacturing & assemblyBOM optimisation
  • Support pre‑compliance testing and certification processes
  • Produce handover documentation for manufacturing partners
Essential Experience of the Electronics & Embedded Systems Engineer
  • Proven experience designing mains‑powered electronics
  • PCB design for domestic or industrial appliances
  • Embedded firmware development (STM32, NXP, ESP32 or similar)
