Job description

Are you prepared to join an outstanding team that is at the forefront of advanced technology? If you are a driven and experienced engineer looking for a chance to contribute to top-tier Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) systems, then we have the ideal position for you!

DragonFire has been and continues to be a boundary pushing weapon system development programme that has significant industry and customer engagement. Thus far the programme has been aimed at developing the UK’s first Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) concept demonstrator, achieving significant success recently with several highly publicised trials activities.

Following on from these successes MBDA is looking for flexible and motivated candidates to continue to develop DragonFire into a world class, deployable, LDEW air defence system. Our ambitious plans involve parallel and interleaved streams of pioneering technology experimentation and rapid weapon system development, providing opportunities across the key weapon system domains of Systems Engineering: requirements, design, performance analysis and certification.

Salary: Circa £50,000 - £60,000 depending on experience

Dynamic (hybrid) working: 2-3 days per week on-site due to workload classification

Security Clearance: British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship

Restrictions and/or limitations relating to nationality and/or rights to work may apply. As a minimum and after offer stage, all successful candidates will need to undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS), which are managed by the MBDA Personnel Security Team.

What we can offer you:

  • Company Bonus: Bonus of up to 21% of base salary, depending on grade.
  • Pension: maximum total (employer and employee) contribution of up to 14%
  • Flexible working: We welcome applicants who are looking for flexible working arrangements

  • Facilities: Fantastic site facilities including subsidised meals, free car parking and much more…

The opportunity:

The Effector Controller Project Engineer (RMO) will be responsible for delivery of a rack mounted Command and Control Processing Unit, including the rack infrastructure the processing unit is installed within. The rack will also house other sub-systems developed within the project that will be required to be integrated with the processing unit. This role is also responsible for the definition of the cabling solution between the equipment within the racks and external interfaces.

Reporting to a Head of Equipment as part of a wider Chief Design Engineer’s organisation; this role will be focused on the hardware delivery and physical certification aspects of these systems. An understanding of how these sub-systems work will also be required to support product delivery, which includes the software product.

The processing unit, rack and associated sub-system will be a delivered unit to the project.

As a Project Engineer (RMO) at MBDA, you will be the technical interface between the project organisation and the equipment Design Authority (internal or external). The RMO provides the leadership that ensures weapon system equipment is designed, accepted, and delivered to meet system performance and project commitments.

What we're looking for from you:

RMOs at MBDA balance the client facing representation with a technical focus lead, subject to the degree of delivery responsibility vested in the supplier or Design Authority. The Effector Controller RMO will be responsible for:

  • Delivering the processing unit, rack and infrastructure, and integrated sub systems;
  • Acceptance of the physical definition of the hardware;
  • Delivering the technical and certification documentation;
  • Supporting the functional integration of the hardware within the wider sub system definition.
