Job description
Overview

West Berkshire Community Hospital is part of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The postholder will act as a State Registered Radiographer and participate in the provision of plain film imaging services to a diverse range of patients within the Radiology Department of WBCH. The role includes providing an excellent standard of radiographic imaging and patient care, and acting as a role model for the profession. A focus on supervision and support of junior staff, with autonomy within professional and managerial boundaries to prioritise and organise own work in response to clinical and service needs. The post is primarily based at WBCH Radiology Department, with imaging support to the WBCH Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), outpatient clinics, wards at WBCH, and local GPs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide imaging services primarily at West Berkshire Community Hospital, with potential work at other sites (including the Royal Berkshire Hospital Radiology Departments) as required.
  • Rotate through CT and MRI imaging as required, after appropriate training and competency assessment.
  • Perform cannulation for intravenous contrast administration after training and assessment, following Trust policy.
  • Maintain consistently high standards and ensure radiation doses are kept to a minimum using the ALARP principle and dose reduction factors.
  • Assess and justify referrals under IRR17, IR(ME)R 2017, following practitioner guidelines; including assessment of complex and/or acute cases.
  • Make autonomous decisions regarding the appropriateness of examinations as an aid to clinical diagnosis; maintain high technique and patient positioning standards.
  • Follow established examination protocols and liaise with Consultant Radiologists regarding optimum technique as required.
  • Possess specialist knowledge and experience appropriate to grade; act as a role model and provide support to more junior staff.
  • Participate in the delivery of an out of hours service, providing imaging support to the WBCH UTC, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ensure accurate patient records, including radiation dose and exposure factors.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance equipment testing programme.
  • Use the Radiology Information System (RIS) for patient registration, ordering and scheduling; record accurate patient information relating to dose and consumables.
  • Use the Picture Archive & Communication System (PACS) to ensure optimum image quality; review images and reports.
Qualifications and Experience
  • State Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council, Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent postgraduate experience, and evidence of recent and extensive post-registration experience at Band 5.
  • Proven clinical experience across a range of radiographic equipment and techniques.
  • Desirable: experience of staff supervision and/or training.
  • Desirable: proven clinical experience in CT imaging.
  • Applicants must hold the DCR(R) or radiography degree equivalent and be state registered; demonstrate CPD activity to show competence and autonomy appropriate to Band 6.
  • Part time and job share will be considered.

  • An opportunity has arisen for a full-time Band 6 Radiographer based at WBCH in Newbury, part of the Royal Berkshire NHS Trust. The post holder will work as part of the Community Imaging Team providing Plain film and CT services. WBCH has been designated as a Community Diagnostic Hub with upgraded X-ray equipment and a Cone Beam CT Unit.
