Job summary

A child care services provider in Greater London is seeking an enthusiastic Deputy Manager to assist in running a dynamic out-of-school club. You will support the Manager in ensuring high standards of care and maintaining a fun, inclusive play environment for children aged 5 to 11. The ideal candidate will have a Level 3 qualification and considerable experience working with children, enthusiastic about leadership and playwork principles. This role also involves close cooperation with parents and schools.

Qualifications

We’re looking for a confident, enthusiastic Deputy Manager who enjoys supporting others, leading by example and helping to deliver a high-quality wraparound service for children and families.

Your Core Purpose

As Deputy Out of School Club Manager, you’ll support the Manager in the day-to-day running of the club, helping to lead the team, maintain high standards of care and play, and ensure safeguarding and compliance at all times. You’ll step into the Manager role when required and play a key part in supporting staff, children and families while keeping play fun, inclusive and child-led.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Support
  • Support the Manager in leading, motivating and developing the staff team.
  • Act as a positive role model, demonstrating excellent play work and professional practice.
  • Assist with staff rotas, deployment and daily organisation.
  • Support induction, mentoring and supervision of playworkers.
  • Deputise for the Manager in their absence, ensuring continuity of leadership.
Play & Child Experience
  • Support the planning and delivery of a varied, engaging and child-led play programme.
  • Encourage free play, choice, independence and positive behaviour.
  • Help create an inclusive environment where all children feel safe, valued and supported.
  • Support children’s emotional wellbeing, friendships and social development.
Safeguarding, Health & Safety
  • Support the Manager in implementing safeguarding and child protection procedures.
  • Act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) where appropriate.
  • Ensure health & safety procedures, risk assessments and safe collection processes are followed.
  • Respond appropriately to concerns, accidents and incidents, reporting in line with policies.
Compliance & Organisation
  • Help maintain accurate records, including registers, accidents and incidents.
  • Support inspection readiness and ongoing quality improvement.
  • Assist with stock, resources and environment checks.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are followed consistently across the club.
Partnership with Parents & Schools
  • Build positive, professional relationships with families.
  • Support clear communication with parents regarding their child’s wellbeing and experiences.
  • Work collaboratively with schools, external agencies and the wider team.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Level 3 qualification or equivalent, countable in ratios(e.g. Early Years Educator, Play work Level 3, Childcare or relevant qualification).
  • Experience working with children aged 5-11 years in a childcare, play or wraparound setting.
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding, child protection and health & safety requirements.
  • Experience supporting or supervising staff (or readiness to step into a leadership role).
  • Good communication, organisation and teamwork skills.
  • Enhanced DBS Checklist with barred check list and suitable to work with children.
  • Full and Relevant 12 Hour Paediatric First Aid Training or willingness to complete before being counted in ratio.
  • Good Written & Spoken English.
  • Food Safety Level 2 or willingness to complete before handling food.

Note: While the EYFS does not apply in full to out of school clubs, managers must demonstrate suitable qualifications, experience and competence to lead the provision and meet Ofsted requirements.

Desirable Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience as a Deputy Manager, Senior Playworker or acting lead.
  • Training or experience in play work principles.
  • Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE or Functional Skills).
  • Experience working with SEND or behaviour support.
  • Familiarity with Ofsted inspections and quality improvement processes.
