Think differently about rehabilitation

HMP Dovegate is no ordinary prison. Situated on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border near Uttoxeter and managed by Serco on behalf of HMPPS, it\'s home to one of only two privately run Therapeutic Communities (TCs) in the entire prison service. This specialist environment supports 180 prisoners who have chosen to self-refer into the TC, committing to an intensive therapeutic programme aimed at reducing their risk and transforming their futures.

Working here means being part of a unique, highly skilled clinical setting where therapy genuinely changes lives - and where your expertise can have a profound and lasting impact.

About the role

We\'re looking for an exceptional clinical leader to join us as Deputy Clinical Director - a senior role that rarely becomes available. You\'ll play a central part in ensuring our therapeutic work runs effectively day-to-day, providing clinical leadership, managerial support, and training to our talented multi-disciplinary team.

You\'ll also:

  • Oversee Audit and Inspection compliance across all Communities
  • Be hands-on in group work when needed
  • Deputise for the Clinical Director in their absence
  • Help shape strategic plans and policies in collaboration with senior leaders

This is a role for someone who thrives in complex, meaningful work and wants to take their career to the next level in a truly unique setting.

What you\'ll bring

  • A Master\'s-level qualification in Psychotherapy, Clinical/Counselling/Forensic Psychology, Mental Health Nursing, or similar health/social care professions
  • Registration with HCPC, UKCP, BACP, BPC or equivalent
  • Significant clinical training as part of your qualification
  • Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Supervision
  • Leadership experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong skills in group therapy delivery and working with complex clinical cases

Experience in psychodynamic therapy or Therapeutic Community principles is desirable but not essential - we can help you develop this!

Why join us?

At Serco, you\'ll find:

  • A place you can make an impact: Do meaningful work that directly changes lives
  • A place you can count on: Our diverse global wide operations and proactive approach to development mean broad opportunities for learning and progression
  • A place for you: Join a supportive, motivated team that values your contribution and wellbeing

What we offer

  • Up to 6% contributory pension
  • Free onsite parking
  • Access to onsite fitness facilities and subsidised meals
  • Blue Light and Serco discounts (cinema, leisure, shopping, and more)
  • Health and wellbeing benefits for you and your family (including EAP, health cash plans, free flu jabs)
  • Extensive career development opportunities - from role-specific training to leadership coaching and formal study

What is a TC?

Therapeutic Communities are an innovative, long-term intervention designed to reduce offending by transforming how rehabilitation is approached in prisons. Unlike traditional correctional methods, TCs focus on a holistic, community-based model where change happens through everyday interactions - not just formal therapy sessions.

At HMP Dovegate, the TC is Democratic, meaning both employees and residents (prisoners) actively participate in shaping and running the community. Everyone has a voice, and every aspect of daily life is open for discussion and personal growth.

Residents build meaningful relationships with each other and with staff, creating a supportive environment where therapy is continuous - happening all day, every day. This pioneering model empowers individuals to take ownership of their rehabilitation and fosters lasting change through shared experience and mutual accountability.
