We are currently looking to recruit a Fitter to construct, maintain and repair the electrical distribution network. This is an important role within the district, where you'll provide key skills and knowledge to ready the network for an electric future and to help meet the challenge of Net Zero across more than 100,000km of network and 30,000 substations, benefiting more than 3.5m homes and businesses across Scotland, England, and Wales.
Day to day you’ll ensure that all site works are carried out safely, in accordance with company policy and safety rules and in an efficient manner. This may include acting as the nominated person in charge of safety for the duration of works attended.
The work of a Fitter typically consists of maintenance and repair of circuit breakers, batteries and transformers within a substation or workshop environment.
Considerable amount of work takes place draining and replenishing oils, some with residual carbon deposits. The bulk of the oil is removed via a pump, it is only the final layer that requires direct contact with the oil.
Operatives are required to follow assigned procedures. Work or work tasks may involve working at height, which may involve working on a structure or standing on a ladder with permanent attachment fall arrest. Once appropriate, employees have the authority and responsibility to implement the appropriate method taking into account the activity to be undertaken, the limitations of the work equipment being considered, the environment, the ground (terrain) and weather conditions at the time of work.
You will be able to plan and carry out work in a safe manner, always adhering to health and safety procedures with an ability to work proactively on own or as part of a team with a confident and enthusiastic attitude.
We will expect a proven attention to detail and able to demonstrate good oral and written communication skills whilst delivering outstanding customer service and essential services 24/7/365 that make a difference to local people and communities.
We will look to you to have demonstrable experience and understanding of the network. Experience working within a utilities business is preferable but not essential.
You should also have sound knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation and excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, as an on‑site representative of the company.
