The Credit Risk Expert is responsible for the development, execution, and continuous improvement of Metro Bank's credit risk assurance activity. The role provides oversight and assurance through independent review and testing of credit decisions, identifying improvements, control gaps and learning outcomes. This role is critical to support safe growth in our Corporate and Commercial lending. This is a technical specialist role in a growing business which requires strong analytical skills, credit risk expertise across a range of Corporate and Commercial lending areas, a strategic mindset and exceptional influencing ability at all levels.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of the annual credit risk assurance plan and present the plan for formal approval by the appropriate governance body, whilst ensuring it supports sustainable, long-term growth and value creation
- Execute credit risk assurance across all Corporate and Commercial lending, engaging with all relevant business units and control functions to ensure coverage of key risks
- Align assurance activity with the bank's future strategy, objectives, and risk appetite, ensuring that assurance activities address current priorities while also anticipating emerging risks and regulatory changes
- Identify control gaps and areas for improvement, recommending effective, pragmatic solutions
- Provide actionable insight on governance, credit risk exposure, and control effectiveness to inform strategic decision-making
- Foster cross-functional collaboration and build strong relationships with lending teams, underwriting teams, directors and Internal Audit to ensure findings are understood and acted upon
- Deliver clear, actionable reports tailored to diverse audiences (board, operational teams, external parties)
What you will need
- Understand the risks associated with your job and what that means for you, Metro Bank and all our stakeholders
- Extensive demonstrable experience in Corporate & Commercial credit risk, underwriting or credit assurance
- Strong knowledge of credit risk management frameworks
- Skilled in preparing and presenting detailed documentation for executive stakeholders and regulatory reviews
- Excellent ability to develop and apply an objective, risk-based approach to recommending effective, pragmatic solutions, ensuring alignment with the bank's risk appetite
- Exposure to a variety of business models, product types, customers, geographies, and distribution channels
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently under pressure
