Controls Service Engineer – North UK (with Possible Nationwide Travel)

Salary: £50,000–£55,000 + overtime
Benefits: Car allowance or van, expenses, training, pension, 22 days holiday + lieu days, laptop & phone

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Controls Service Engineer to join our growing service support team. This position is primarily home-based and focused on remote technical support, with occasional travel across the UK for on‑site fault resolution. A significant portion of the role involves providing reactive assistance for control system issues, supported by a rotating out‑of‑hours call schedule.

This is a service‑only position—ideal for an engineer who enjoys troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and supporting customers with complex automation challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical assistance for control system faults and breakdowns via phone, email, and remote access tools.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues on Siemens PLCs (TIA Portal), HMIs, and associated automation equipment, including SEW hardware.
  • Attend customer locations for corrective maintenance when problems cannot be resolved remotely.
  • Produce clear and detailed service reports covering work undertaken, observations, and recommendations.
  • Maintain high standards of safety and compliance during all site visits.
  • Offer feedback to internal engineering teams to support continuous improvement of control systems and service processes.
Working Pattern
Standard Working Week Remotely Based
  • 08:00 – 17:00, Monday – Friday
    • Planned service visits and PPM activities
    • Training on new or ongoing projects
    • Engineer development and skills training
Out-of-Hours Call Out (fortnightly)
  • Nights: 18:00 – 06:00 (WFH, remote support, site visits only if remote fix is not possible)
  • Days: 06:00 – 18:00 (WFH, remote support, site visits as required)
Required Skills & Experience
  • Strong proficiency with Siemens TIA Portal, including S7 PLCs and HMI systems.
  • Solid background in industrial electrical systems, including panel wiring and fault finding.
  • Experience delivering remote technical support and on‑site service within industrial or manufacturing environments.
  • Confident in diagnosing, analysing, and resolving automation issues independently.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proactive, customer‑focused approach.
Benefits Package
  • Competitive salary with overtime opportunities
  • £5,000 annual car allowance or company van for work use
  • Mileage, accommodation, and subsistence fully covered when travelling
  • Car allowance paid after successful 3‑month probation if van option selected
  • Company laptop and mobile phone
  • Pension and standard company benefits
  • 22 days holiday, plus a day in lieu for any bank holidays worked
  • Ongoing technical training and professional development
