Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Adult Liaison service based at Southend Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in providing high‑quality person‑centred mental health care. The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical leadership for the assessment and management of adult patients 18 to 70 years admitted to Southend Hospital, and will serve as the Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act to Southend Hospital. The post holder must have full GMC registration, be on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry (or equivalent), and be on the CCT within six months of appointment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and be the Responsible Clinician for General Adult patients referred to the Liaison team.
  • Review new patients in a timely manner and oversee clinical management of patients on the wards.
  • Be available for timely CPA meetings and facilitate discharge planning.
  • Carry out duties as Responsible Clinician, including Mental Health Act assessments, preparation of tribunal reports and giving oral evidence at managers hearings and mental health review tribunals (if required).
  • Support staff development and contribute to continual service improvement.
  • Provide clinical supervision to trainees.
  • Participate in clinical audit to ensure continuous improvement of the service.
  • Cover holidays and absences (the old age Liaison service has an experienced full‑time consultant psychiatrist).
Qualifications – Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register.
  • Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant.
  • Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status.
Qualifications – Desirable
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych.
  • On the Specialist Register with qualifications General Adult CCT with experience in Liaison Psychiatry.
  • Postgraduate degree in psychiatry MRC Psych or equivalent.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
Eligibility
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months.
  • Approved clinician status.
  • Approved under Section 12.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
