Consultant Physician – Respiratory & General (Internal) Medicine

Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford – Permanent, Full-time, Consultant level.

We are looking for a Consultant Physician to join the Respiratory team. The role will involve acute respiratory medicine, inpatient respiratory support, and regional specialist services.

Responsibilities

• Manage acute and long‑term respiratory and general internal medicine cases.
• Lead the 6‑bed inpatient respiratory support unit, providing Level 1 care.
• Participate in the general physician on‑call rota (1 in 16) for acute take.
• Develop and audit clinical pathways and quality improvement projects.
• Teach and support undergraduate medical, nursing, technical and other clinical staff.
• Collaborate on multidisciplinary research projects.

Qualifications

• GMC recognised medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
• MRCP (UK or Ireland) or equivalent.
• CCT in Respiratory & General (Internal) Medicine, or eligibility within 6 months of interview.
• Evidence of continuing medical education and current UK professional registration.

Desirable

• Other postgraduate degrees (BSc, MSc, MD, PhD).
• Competent in pleural ultrasound and sub‑specialist interests (NIV, sleep, ILD, pleural disease).
• Published clinical research in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Knowledge of IT‑based patient information systems.

Experience

• Full and independent management of clinical patient workload.
• Experience in respiratory service leadership and clinical audit.

Clinical Governance & Teaching

• Involvement in clinical governance, audit and teaching activities.
• Ability to support learning activities of medical undergraduates, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff.

Research

• Experience of collaborative clinical or laboratory research.
• Published clinical work in peer‑reviewed journals (desirable).

Knowledge & Skills

• Commitment to continuing medical education.
• Awareness of current general medical practices.
• Proficiency in office applications and internet use.
