Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology - Intraoperative Monitoring

This is a new full‑time Consultant post. The remit is to work closely with the Neurosurgical team at King's to provide intraoperative monitoring (IOM) for neurooncology and other surgical subspecialties. The neuro‑oncology unit is expanding to become the largest in the UK and the volume and complexity of cases require in‑house dedicated IOM support. The postholder will work flexibly to ensure continued service provision and support the in‑house team of clinical physiologists in IOM.
Although classed as a consultant post in Clinical Neurophysiology, the role requires close working with the Department of Neurosurgery and is expected to be accommodated within Neurosurgery and line‑managed similarly.
Main Duties of the Job
The post will be based at Denmark Hill. The proposed Job Plan is attached and includes an average of 9 programmed activities of direct clinical care and 1 PA for supporting professional and/or other activities. All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust’s sites as required by the service. As a senior employee, you will work in close cooperation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues, providing high‑quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. Integral to these responsibilities are:
- Provision of a first‑class clinical service
- Effective leadership of all staff engaged in the specialty
- Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London / KHP
- Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
- Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans
- Maintaining confidence in business plans and development strategies for the specialty, Care Group or the Trust

Job Responsibilities
- Provide high‑quality care to patients, including all aspects of treatment and management for the Care Group’s proper functioning.
- Share responsibility for 24/7 coverage on a rota basis, including covering colleagues’ annual leave and short‑term sickness.
- Supervise junior medical/dental practitioners in a shared capacity with other consultant colleagues.
- Carry out teaching, examination, accreditation duties, and contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Commit to outpatient clinic duties in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group’s management team.
- Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests in line with the Trust’s R&D framework.
- Participate in audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes, and Learning from Deaths.
- Play an active role in formulating, implementing and monitoring the Care Group’s Business Plan, including discussions about service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
- Perform all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan.
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff in the specialty, fostering and developing projects aimed at enhancing post‑qualification professional education and training.
- Collaborate with clinical and other professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and job satisfaction, including involvement in the appraisal process for peers and juniors.
- Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
- Adhere to all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
- Prepare and undertake protective interventions consistently with evidence‑based practice and patient safety.
- Support Consultant‑led 7‑day services and, if required, contribute equally with other Consultant colleagues in future developments.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Higher Education
- MRCP or equivalent
- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
- Full registration with GMC
- Name on GMC Specialist Register at the start of appointment
- Applicants must be within 6 months of CCT, in the final stages of portfolio pathway application, or fully registered on the GMC Specialist Register at interview; otherwise, applications will not be considered.
Training and Experience
- Wide experience in all aspects of Clinical Neurophysiology, culminating in a Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC or a completed portfolio pathway application.
- Experience in the operation and management of an IOM service.
Administration
- Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of IOM services in a busy teaching hospital.
- Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.
- Familiar with the current structure of the UK National Health Service and recent initiatives and changes.

Management and Leadership
- Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multidisciplinary teams.
- Management course and/or qualification.
Audit and Quality Improvement
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
- Completed audit projects.
- Audit publications.
Research and Publications
- Experience of clinical research.
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
- Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of IOM and/or Clinical Neurophysiology.
Teaching
- Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.
- Teaching skills course/qualification.
