Job description

Our NHS Teaching Hospital based in the East of England is recruiting two Consultants in Care of the Elderly on a substantive or fixed-term basis. We are seeking suitable candidates to join our team.

This is an exciting time to join the Trust, with ongoing service reconfiguration for unscheduled care and the development of our "front door multidisciplinary frailty service." A new Frailty Assessment Unit is being established to manage patients effectively across the Trust, with plans to operate seven days a week. The service also aims to develop dedicated clinics within Older People's Medicine, including a falls clinic, fracture liaison service (FLS), and a comprehensive geriatric assessment clinic.

The successful candidates will be expected to:

  1. Contribute to the development of the Care of the Elderly service.
  2. Provide mutual out-of-hours cover for General Internal Medicine alongside other Consultants, including coverage for annual, study, and professional leave.
  3. Offer consultation and advisory services to medical colleagues in other specialties.
  4. Liaise with medical staff across departments and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities.
  5. Engage in the hospital's continuing medical education programmes.
  6. Act as educational supervisor and participate in appraisals and assessments for doctors in training.
  7. Contribute to departmental teaching, audit, and governance activities.

One of these positions is suitable for new Consultants, Specialty Doctors seeking to advance to a Consultant role, or senior Consultants looking to join a department with a dedicated Care of the Elderly ward, a strong team led by an OPM-trained Consultant, and excellent leadership. The Trust offers a comprehensive retention and relocation package, full support for service development, and opportunities to develop sub-specialties.

The location offers high-quality housing, schools, a vibrant cultural scene, excellent transport links to Norwich, and access to beautiful coastlines and rural outdoor areas.

Additional information includes:

  • A significant opportunity to reshape Older People's Medicine services.
  • 10 PAs per week, negotiable.
  • Accommodation of special interests.
  • A modern teaching hospital.
  • Opportunities for sub-specialty development.
  • A new hospital is planned within the next five years.

Benefits include a retention and relocation package potentially up to £40K, depending on conditions, and full leadership training and development support.
