Job description
Overview

This is a job advertisement for a Substantive Consultant in Anaesthesia. The department will strive to accommodate any sub specialty interest including paediatrics, perioperative medicine, intensive care medicine, trauma, obstetrics, acute pain, regional anaesthesia, and teaching.

Job responsibilities
  • The appointee will be based at Darent Valley Hospital. The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department. He/she may be asked to cover lists in QMH Sidcup as a part of the job plan. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and the running of his/her clinical department. For purposes of management and use of resources he/she will be accountable to the Clinical Director of the Critical Care Directorate, working closely with the General Manager, and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated. Participate actively and at times take a lead in research and clinical audit projects, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties. The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision, management of resident doctors and participate in their appointment with other Consultants. The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff. The department prides itself in providing high quality training and trainee support including exam preparation as an important part of the consultant role. He/she will be expected to co-operate in the present agreed framework of the directorate management structure arrangements. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. All consultants have a duty in maintaining patient safety. The post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she meets the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external. The Consultant will be required to assist management and its agents during investigations into claims alleging medical negligence and, where requested, to provide related factual statements. This includes Coroners inquests.
Person specification
  • Qualifications Essential: MBBS or equivalent; FRCA or equivalent; Licence to practice and full registration with GMC; On the specialist register for Anaesthetics; scheduled to obtain this within 6 months of the date of interview but before starting in post.
  • Desirable: Experience in any anaesthetic specialty sub interests including ICM.
  • Training and experience Essential: Ability to do a wide range of anaesthetic lists including obstetrics and paediatrics. Able to look after sick children while awaiting retrieval along with the paediatric consultant. Able to look after high risk patients for elective and emergency surgery. Demonstration of commitment to Anaesthesia such as relevant audits, publications, introduction of guidelines, relevant courses etc. Desirable: Additional training qualifications.
  • Administration Essential: Experience of organisation and running of theatres in a busy DGH anaesthetic department. Desirable: Familiar with current structure of the National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.
  • Management Essential: Ability to manage the theatre floor including the "Starred role" once settled into the job. An in depth understanding of the NHS in general - its challenges and its relevance to the consultant role. Desirable: Management course and/or qualification.
  • Quality Improvement Projects / Audit Essential: Thorough understanding of principles of QIP / medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed QIP / audit projects in the past. Desirable: Experience of clinical research culminating in publication. Publication of review articles or case reports. Research Methodology Course.
  • Teaching Essential: Experience of post-graduate teaching. Desirable: Certificate course in teaching. Experience as an Educational Supervisor; Teaching nursing staff and other professional groups.
