Pay rate: £20.71 to £21.57 per hour PAYE, DOE
Contract Type: Temporary, Anticipated 3 months
Working Arrangement: Assume some hybrid working. TBC with line manager.
Driving Licence is needed for this role

About the Role

On behalf of a local council, we are seeking a Senior Conservation Officer to play a key role in protecting and enhancing the District's historic environment by providing expert advice and guidance on conservation and historic building matters to the Planning and Development team and to customers, facilitating the management of conservation areas, developing policies and supplementary planning guidance and supporting projects that deliver economic growth and regeneration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out duties under planning and related laws for conservation and historic buildings, and give advice to the Planning and Development Team.
  • Assess listed building consent applications and make recommendations.
  • Prepare appeal statements and give evidence at hearings, public inquiries, and in Magistrates’ Court on conservation and historic building matters.
  • Advise customers on planning and heritage issues, including pre-application guidance.
  • Support the care and improvement of historic areas by completing conservation area appraisals, preparing Article 4 Directions and Management Plans, proposing new conservation areas, and running public consultations.
  • Conduct buildings‑at‑risk surveys.
  • Advise on planning policies for heritage and help prepare or review guidance on conservation and historic buildings.
  • Contribute to projects that support economic regeneration and growth.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree in a relevant field (e.g., Conservation, Historic Buildings, Architecture, Planning, Archaeology, or Heritage Management).
  • Postgraduate qualification in heritage conservation or a related discipline is desirable.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., IHBC, RTPI, RIBA) or working toward membership is desirable.
  • Full UK driving licence (often required for site visits).
  • Experience working in heritage, planning, conservation, architecture, or a related field.
  • Experience assessing listed building consent applications or similar heritage-related proposals.
  • Experience preparing reports, appeal statements, or presenting technical information.
  • Involvement in conservation area appraisals, Article 4 Directions, or management plans is desirable.
  • Experience conducting site visits, surveys, or buildings‑at‑risk assessments is desirable.
  • Experience advising the public or professionals on planning or heritage matters.
  • Experience contributing to planning policy or supplementary planning guidance is desirable.
