About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and experienced Support Worker to provide 24-hour care for a young man living with Angelman syndrome in his own home. The role focuses on supporting his daily living, health, safety, communication, and community participation while promoting dignity, independence, and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide personal care (showering, dressing, toileting, continence support)
- Support with PEG feeding, hydration, and nutrition
- Assist with mobility and transfers (may include hoist use if required)
- Administer or assist with medications as per care plan
- Monitor for seizures or medical concerns and follow emergency protocols
- Support daily routines, therapy programs, and structured activities
- Encourage communication using preferred communication methods
- Provide emotional support and companionship
- Assist with community outings and appointments
- Maintain a safe, clean, and supportive home environment
- Complete daily notes, documentation, and incident reports
- Work closely with family members, therapists, and medical professionals
Essential Requirements
- Certificate III or IV in Disability, Individual Support, Aged Care, or equivalent (or working toward)
- Experience supporting people with complex needs and/or Angelman syndrome (preferred)
Understanding of:
- Epilepsy/seizure management (or willingness to train)
- Manual handling and personal care
- Behaviour support strategies
- First Aid & CPR certification
- Police Check & Working With Vulnerable People Check
- Full driver’s licence (if transport required)
- Strong communication skills
- Patience, empathy, and reliability
- Ability to work day, night, waking night, and weekend shifts
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Experience with non-verbal communication systems
- PEG feeding experience (if applicable)
- Experience with behavioral support plans
- Previous in-home or 24-hour care experience
- Knowledge of NDIS or individualized care plans
