Job description
Community Dental Officer – Part Time

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and conscientious dentist to join the Community Special Care Dental Service. The role is part of a small team working across Kingston, Richmond and Wandsworth. Candidates will preferably have experience in a UK‑based salaried primary care service and established skills in the provision of oral health care for children and adults with special needs.

Full registration with the General Dental Council, completion of foundation training (or equivalent) and eligibility for a NHS performer number are essential. A driving licence and daily access to a vehicle are highly desirable.

Main duties
  • Provide high quality oral health care to patients, both adults and children, with special needs and to vulnerable children with high caries rates and behavioural issues.
  • Organise a designated surgery or clinic; the location of the clinical duties may be varied according to the needs of the service.
  • Keep accurate and clear contemporaneous written records on each patient outlining the clinical treatment performed and any advice given.
  • Participate in school screening activities and identify the dental needs of the locality through appropriate BASCD epidemiological surveys.
  • Perform domiciliary visits to provide clinical oral healthcare for housebound and elderly patients with physical disabilities or mobility problems.
  • Assist in the training of dental therapy students, undergraduate dental students and other trainee dental care professionals as part of the outreach teaching programme.
  • Complete clinical and administrative data required for contractual, research or audit purposes.
  • Adapt professional duties at short notice as required by the needs of the Department and work from more than one clinical base during the week as determined by the needs of the service.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal integrity and professional competence, including a commitment to Continuing Professional Development; keep accurate records of all CPD activity.
  • Participate in Peer Review, Clinical Governance and annual Departmental Study Days within the Department of Community Special Care Dentistry.
  • Take responsibility for the safety and security of the working environment, specifically with reference to health and safety at work legislation, control of substances hazardous to health, risk management and local and national decontamination guidelines.
  • Observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
  • Active contribution to the development of the team, attend mandatory training courses and meetings as directed by the Consultant/Head of Department or authorised deputies.
People Management and Performance
  • Lead, coach and manage the performance of the team in line with good people management practices.
  • Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure each member of the team has a clear set of objectives and development plans.
Person Specification – Knowledge
  • Completion of foundation training or equivalent.
  • Supervision of clinical staff.
  • Community Dentistry experience.
  • Understanding of the current issues facing dental services.
Qualifications
  • Full registration with the General Dental Council.
