Job description
Overview

There is an exciting opportunity to join the department of Anaesthesia & Critical Care at The Christie’s main site in Withington, Manchester as a Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia and Critical Care. The post complements a team of 24 Consultant Anaesthetists, 9 SAS Doctors and 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP). The post is particularly suitable for doctors considering careers in ICM, anaesthesia or other acute specialties. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience working within an integrated oncological critical care service, led by a dedicated Critical Care consultant team, delivering high quality patient care. Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of commencement is required.

There is no on call element associated with this role. The successful candidate will be based on the Oncology Critical Care Unit (OCCU), an eight-bedded facility that supports care for patients undergoing treatment at The Christie Withington site and delivers around 600 patient episodes per year (60% surgical).

Role details

The post holder will provide resident medical cover for the OCCU during the daytime and some twilight shifts, and will support the Cardiac Arrest, Outreach and Acute Pain Teams at The Christie under the supervision of a consultant. Although not a recognised teaching post, learning and teaching opportunities will be catered to the successful candidate based on their career goals.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year, based in Manchester and serving a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire. The centre provides radiotherapy, chemotherapy, highly specialist surgery, and a wide range of support and diagnostic services; it is an international leader in research and hosts one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials annually.

This post is for 40 hours per week to provide resident medical cover for the OCCU during the daytime with some twilight shifts and support for the Cardiac Arrest, Outreach and Acute Pain Teams. There will be regular time-tabled supervised sessions in clinical Anaesthesia and time for activities such as audit. There may be an opportunity to cover resident night shifts for ad hoc payments, depending on experience. There is no on call or night shift work allocated to this role within the rota pattern.

Duties and responsibilities

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will be complemented by Specialty Doctors, IMT deanery trainees and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP). The OCCU is a state-of-the-art eight-bedded facility; the critical care service complements a comprehensive range of cancer specialties including surgical, clinical, medical, and Haematological oncology. The unit delivers about 600 patient episodes per year; 60% of which are surgical.

Each day shift will commence with a handover and the post holder will be required to:

  • Examine OCCU patients
  • Present the patients to the consultant intensivist on the ward round when detailed management plans will be made
  • Carry out those management plans
  • Handover the care of his/her patients to the person covering the unit for the night

The OCCU resident is also a member of the cardiac arrest team and may be required to attend to acutely unwell patients outside the unit. During the day the OCCU resident works under direct supervision by the OCCU consultant; out-of-hours the OCCU consultant is on call from home.

Duration and Monitoring of the Programme: This fellowship is for 12 months. Educational supervision will be provided. The post is based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX.
