Job summary

A leading recruitment firm is looking for a Civil Engineer to work on a long-term contract in Glasgow/Hybrid. The role involves producing design documentation and managing engineering changes for safety-critical infrastructure. Candidates should have at least 5 years of experience in design assessment of reinforced concrete and steel structures, with strong knowledge of British Standards. SC Clearance or ability to obtain it is required.

Qualifications

Job description

We are looking for a Civil Engineer to work on a long term contract in Glasgow/Hybrid. Rate is c£60-70 Umbrella/PAYE per hour. Our client is ideally seeking someone who holds SC Clearance or has the ability to obtain SC Clearance and is a Sole UK National.

Duties for the Civil Engineer role:
  • Produce, develop, review and maintain engineering Design Substantiation documentation for safety-critical infrastructure.
  • Develop, assess and manage engineering design changes, concessions and technical justifications.
  • Present design substantiation and supporting evidence to relevant safety or technical committees.
  • Produce and maintain EIMT schedules, operating procedures and supporting documentation that meet design and safety case requirements.
  • Lead or support Periodic Review of Safety reports and assessments.
  • Provide expert engineering guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare scopes of work for Independent Technical Assessment (ITA) and Independent Peer Review (IPR).
  • Apply engineering principles to integrate existing and emerging technologies into infrastructure and systems.
  • Support the design, development, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of systems within a nuclear or high-risk environment.
  • Produce detailed technical justifications to support civil and structural design modifications.
  • Review and verify technical reports, safety case submissions, calculations and other engineering documentation prepared by colleagues or contractors.
Experience Requirements
Essential
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the design assessment of reinforced concrete and steel structures subjected to dynamic loads (e.g., seismic, blast, wind, rain, snow).
  • Experience working on reinforced concrete structures and marine or waterfront structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce robust technical justifications for civil/structural design changes in a high-hazard industry.
  • Experience applying theoretical and practical engineering methods across the full asset lifecycle in a nuclear or high-risk environment.
  • Ability to apply broad and specialist engineering knowledge, with an understanding of emerging technologies.
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including British Standards and Eurocodes.
Desirable
  • Experience working in a nuclear or similarly regulated high-hazard industry.
  • Knowledge of safety case development and hazard identification techniques (e.g., HAZID/HAZOP).
  • Experience designing and assessing safety-related structures, systems and components.
  • Familiarity with UK or international nuclear regulatory frameworks and nuclear-specific codes and standards.
Qualifications & Training
Essential
  • For candidates from a non-nuclear background: completion of an introductory nuclear training course within 6 months of appointment.
  • Minimum HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Incorporated Engineer status or equivalent experience.
Desirable
  • Engineering degree.
  • Chartered Engineer status.
