Job description
Overview

To work with Directorates, Wards and Departments in the provision of a comprehensive Portering Service throughout the Trust. CHS are looking to recruit enthusiastic individuals to join our Facilities team within the Portering Services department at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The roles are permanent posts working over a 7-day period, covering a 24 hour rota with various shifts (early, late, night) including weekends and public holidays. The successful candidates will be trained to cover all aspects of the Portering role, including Waste Portering.

Responsibilities
  • Transfer patients to wards and departments by wheelchair, trolley or bed (unaccompanied in some cases).
  • Deliver and collect clinical items, medicines, and other supplies following set procedures and maintain documentation as required.
  • Assist with patient transfers where appropriate, including use of PAT slides and coordination with nursing staff.
  • Collect and remove waste (domestic and clinical) from wards and departments at set times.
  • Collect and deliver goods and supplies from central stores to wards and departments; move food trolleys from kitchens to wards.
  • Transport equipment such as ultrasound machines, crash trolleys, gas cylinders and other items; change gas cylinders and monitor gas flows where required.
  • Collect specimens and deliver to Pathology; collect SSD trolleys and assist in theatres and departments; manage instrument packs and assist with sterilisation-related tasks as directed.
  • Assist with on-the-job training of Portering duties to new staff and support colleagues during high workload periods.
  • Provide a messenger service for documents and X-Rays as needed; undertake general Portering duties and ward moves as directed by charge hands.
  • Support and adapt to changes in workload, technology and processes; work within codes of practice and professional guidelines.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Physically fit with good communication skills and the ability to work on own initiative or as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated with a commitment to customer care and quality issues.
  • Flexibility to cover a 24 hour rota and 7-day shifts, with heavy lifting as part of the role.
  • Willingness to provide relief cover for annual leave/absence as required; smart appearance and caring nature; ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing workload.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and work with line management for instruction and support, including out of hours as necessary.
  • Attends mandatory and role-specific training and participates in annual development planning with line manager.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures and equal opportunity commitments.
Work Patterns and Application

Permanent posts, 37.5 hours per week, covering a 7-day period with a 24 hour rota. Shifts include earlies, lates and night shifts, over 7 days (including weekends and public holidays).
