Canons House is a lifeline for families of children with profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex health and care needs. Our team at Canons House support children and young people aged 5 to 17 to experience stability, familiarization, a sense of belonging and positive physical, emotional and mental health.

As a Childcare Officer Assistant, you will support the vulnerable and disabled children with complex health, support and personal care needs, help children access and enjoy a wide range of fun and accessible activities, experiences and opportunities to explore their individual interests. You will also support all areas of care planning, risk assessment and support. This involves working alongside Health Care professionals, Social Workers, Schools and other supportive agencies. As part of this role, you will be required to work towards achieving an NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare.

Job responsibilities
  • You will be required to work as part of a team. This will involve taking part in handover,offering suggestions and ideas to help the shift leader plan activities for the shift. You will berequired to follow instruction from the shift leader to ensure smooth and efficient running ofthe home, be a team player and be flexible in your management of disruptions/changes withinthe daily routine.
  • To participate and share responsibility for the provision of a safe and comfortableenvironment for children and young people. You will be required to undertake all mandatorytraining to ensure you are equipped with the knowledge and understanding to maintain a safeenvironment. This will include being able to report accurate details of any health and safetyconcern to the shift leader.
  • To participate in the working rotas, including evenings, sleeping-in duties and weekend dutiesin accordance with policy and as is necessary for the efficient running of the Home.
  • You will be required to be a key worker to a small number of children. This will include theability to gain an in-depth understanding of your key children; attending reviews and liaisingclosely with other professionals to act in the best interest of the child.
  • In conjunction with senior staff, be able to assess the needs of your key children to writereports, and make accurate changes to support plans and risk assessments.
  • You will be able to recognise safeguarding concerns and report to the shift leaderimmediately. You will be required to maintain your safeguarding knowledge andunderstanding through Wiltshire Councils e-learning and keep up to date with the correctreporting procedures in the absence of the shift leader.
  • To be involved in individual and group recreational activities as appropriate, both in-houseand out in the community.
  • Assist in the delivery of support including a range of specialist support and care to childrenand young people some with complex medical care needs. This will include training inspecific areas of complex health e.g. enteral feeding and keeping abreast of changes toregulations and childs specific needs.
  • As well as providing for the emotional and basic physical needs of children including, where itis appropriate to do so, assist with personal care, washing, feeding, dressing, toileting etc.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, supervision and appraisals and any training asidentified by your line manager. This will include specific induction for Canons House.
  • To engage and listen to children and young people both on an individual level and in groupmeetings and report outcomes to the shift leader.
  • Be able to actively develop and support an environment that stimulates children and providesopportunities for them to achieve their full potential. This will be done by encouragingindependence and self-help skills in-line with individuals support and CIN plans. You willhave the ability to empower and work with a person-centred approach to encourage childrento meet their goals and targets.
  • Act in Compliance with service policy on health and safety, e.g. prevention notification ofaccidents, prevention of fire and in line with the home's instructions and procedures.
  • Seek advice from senior/ line manager immediately of any situation where you may have aconcern.
