About Me: I'm a family oriented, non-binary wheelchair user. Currently living in Bristol with my wife and stepson. My disabilities include advanced Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), autism and mental health difficulties. My mobility is severely affected. My goals in life are to live a happy and fulfilled family life - I'm extremely lucky to have a large family network including friends. I like to be as independent as possible and access the community, this often includes nightlife and live music. I also have plans to travel in Europe. In the evenings I enjoy gaming, music and discussing science and philosophy. I describe myself as being anti-establishment and believe community should be the most important thing.
About the role: I struggle physically with all aspects of life (I am unable to move much), meaning most of the role involves personal care and manual handling. The bungalow is fully adapted for my needs with a wet room and track hoists. I like to keep independent with decision making and choices. The house can be busy at times with family life and friend visits, but everyone is extremely welcoming and kind. This means some daily organising/cleaning is crucial. My wife is also physically disabled and has a personal assistant of her own, so some collaborative work is required. My stepson is autistic with ADHD - he is very happy and bouncy. My wife (his mother) regulates his extra needs extremely well. I hope the person who gets the role will become a lifelong friend as well as PA. At night I use a ventilator and I use a regular nebuliser/cough assist machine. We have four cats. The PAs have use of their own room.
You’ll be supporting me with day-to-day living, including (but not limited to):
There is some night waking - I tend to go to bed in the early hours of the morning.
