Role Summary

There is an opportunity to work along side the Band 7 in the Bone Bank Service in the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre. You will be responsible for assessing patients suitability for femoral head bone donation and obtaining their consent. You will also be responsible for checking results and completing relevant paperwork and inputting on the system. You will be required to train new members of staff in theatre and updating this training when required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Theatre Practitioner to support the existing Band 7 team at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital in Exeter. This role is within a growing service that focuses on the donation and processing of allografts, specifically harvesting femoral heads for use in bone grafting during revision and spinal surgeries.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the safe and ethical retrieval of bone tissue, in full compliance with regulations set by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA). You will be responsible for training staff in the critical procedures involved in bone donation, including patient consent processes, as well as maintaining high standards of care throughout.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Bone Donation and Allograft Harvesting: Safely assist with the retrieval of femoral heads for use in surgeries, ensuring compliance with HTA guidelines.
  • Staff Training: Deliver and support training programs to ensure staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills required for ethical bone donation, including techniques for obtaining informed consent from patients.
  • Consenting Patients: Ensure that patients are fully informed about the process and implications of bone donation, and that consent is obtained in accordance with HTA guidelines.
  • Data Analysis & Record Maintenance: Manage the collection, analysis, and secure storage of donor data, ensuring accurate records are maintained for each donation, and that all relevant reports are completed and stored in compliance with HTA regulations.

Working Pattern

hours per week. Fixed Tuesday, but flexible on other days. Monday - Friday. No weekend or Bank Holiday working. Shift patterns can be negotiated.
