Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has become available within the neuropathology laboratory to join a busy and technically diverse team. This peninsula specialism provides a diagnostic service to the region encompassing surgical, post mortem, muscle and nerve work along with support for local and national research collaborations. Applications are invited from suitably qualified interested individuals. Knowledge of special stains, immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy would be advantageous although in‑service training will be available to the successful candidate.
Main Duties of the Job
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as those with Priority and At Risk status. The role includes:
- Provide a clinical technical service by performing routine and specialist techniques to biological material.
- Support all technical aspects within the Neuropathology service and record data as required.
- Facilitate smooth running of the service and undertake scientific duties.
- Maintain and run specialist equipment up to a value of £350,000.

Job Responsibilities
- Participate in routine and specialised techniques in Neuropathology and other laboratory areas as required.
- Participate in all internal and external quality control/quality assurance systems and schemes.
- Jointly responsible for maintaining adequate stocks of reagents and consumables.
- Prepare and provide statistical and other information as required.
- Monitor information to assist and carry out audit activities for clinical audit, reporting or research.
- Keep up to date with health and safety requirements and actively participate in health and safety of the sections.
- Participate in staff annual appraisal and achieve objectives.
- Assist in continuous quality improvement processes, including audit, corrective action and preventative action.
- Maintain necessary communication and relationship skills to facilitate smooth running of the section.
- Assist in implementation of new methodologies and ensure standards of quality are maintained.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the IBMS and HCPC.
- State registration with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
Desirable Qualifications
- Associate of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (AIBMS) or Fellowship.
Essential Knowledge & Experience
- Proven knowledge of the pathology of disease.
- Participation in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
- Proven knowledge of health and safety issues relating to a cellular pathology laboratory.
Desirable Experience
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications.
- Working knowledge of iLab.
Essential Aptitude & Abilities
- Excellent communication skills, able to deal with patients and staff at all levels with tact and diplomacy.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills.
- Attention to detail.
