Job description
Overview

This position is for a full time trust grade SHO level doctor in Bariatric Surgery and Emergency General Surgery at Homerton University Hospital. This is not a recognized training post, but it would be ideal for candidates who are not currently in training posts and who are planning a surgical career and intend to sit the MRCS exam. It would also suit candidates who have recently passed the MRCS exam, but require further experience prior to moving to registrar level.

Department and scope

The department offers bariatric surgery, upper GI surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy and fundoplication) and laparoscopic general surgery (such as hernia surgery). Homerton University Hospital has a nationally recognized high volume bariatric unit, and the appointee will gain substantial experience in the complex management of patients undergoing metabolic and obesity surgery. The appointee will be responsible for ward-based management of these patients and will be supported by senior team members. The unit is staffed by 3 SHO level doctors (these posts), 5 registrars, 7 consultants, and a team of dietitians, nurse specialists and physiotherapists.

Clinical duties and opportunities

The appointee will be encouraged to attend theatre when possible. They will be supported to attend courses and sit exams as their individual needs dictate. The bariatric unit is active in research, and the appointee will be encouraged to participate in research projects. The unit has an excellent record of presentation at national and international conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

Emergency General Surgery and rota

In addition, the appointee will have ample opportunity to maintain and enhance their skills in emergency general surgery. This will be part of a 1 in 5 SHO rota. The rota includes 8:00 to 20:30 shifts, split into Mon–Thu and Fri–Sun in separate weeks. Appropriate zero days are given within the rota. During on-call shifts you will support the EGS team in seeing patients on wards and clerking in the Emergency Department. There will also be opportunities to attend emergency theatre and training in routine emergency operations such as laparoscopic appendicectomy.

Teaching, assessment and development

The post holder will have opportunities to attend structured teaching programmes provided by the department and attend departmental meetings, including Upper GI MDT and audit meetings. They will be expected to attend BSS, CCrISP, STEP Core and other courses, with funding available as appropriate to their level. A Surgical Tutor will be assigned to ensure WBA’s assessment and continuing development.
