Job description

Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Band 5/6 Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian

The closing date is 04 January 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the children's diabetes team for a full‑time band 5/6 paediatric diabetes dietitian.

We are seeking a highly motivated dietitian eager to develop a career in childhood and adolescent diabetes. The team is multidisciplinary and based at Dorset County Hospital, comprising 2 administrative staff, 1 health‑care assistant, 4 diabetes specialist nurses, 1 full‑time band 7 lead diabetes specialist dietitian, 1 clinical psychologist, 1 assistant psychologist, and paediatric diabetes consultants. The majority of children we support have type 1 diabetes, many using hybrid closed‑loop (HCL) systems.

The role involves empowering and delivering evidence‑based diabetes education to children and families via MDT clinics, pre‑pump dietitian reviews, HCL start sessions, annual dietetic reviews, and support at diagnosis and during hospital admissions.

For the right candidate we would consider a band 5/6 development role aiming for band 6 within 12–18 months, subject to successful completion of an approved paediatric diabetes MSc‑level module.

Main duties of the job

Work as part of the Dorset County Hospital Paediatric Dietetic and Diabetes teams to provide an efficient and effective, evidence‑based dietetic service for a complex caseload of children and young people with diabetes (CYPD).

  • Be a source of clinical expertise to the paediatric diabetes multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Provide dietetic care for CYPD, primarily those with type 1, in a variety of settings in the West Dorset locality.
  • Provide specialised assessment, treatment and support of patients with co‑existing medical conditions requiring additional dietary manipulation.
  • Train other healthcare professionals, school and nursery staff, and other care providers as part of the paediatric diabetes multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Support junior team members and student dietitians.
  • Receive regular reviews and support from the line manager to develop your skills, with encouragement for CPD and opportunities for participation in Dorset‑wide and departmental CPD sessions.
