Job description
Advanced Specialist Pharmacist – Surgery

Apply highly specialist knowledge in the pharmaceutical management of surgical patients to develop and implement Trust protocols/guidelines and undertake audits and research.

Support in the development of pharmaceutical services and medicine management to general surgery, vascular, urology, trauma and orthopaedics, planned and pre-operative care.

Provide highly specialist pharmacy advice and training to consultants and junior medical staff, nursing staff, pharmacy staff, other healthcare professionals, patients and carers.

Liaison with ward, medical and nursing staff, other healthcare professionals, general managers, drug budget, holders, pharmacy staff involved in medicine supply, medicines information, regional and national colleagues.

To provide regular structured feedback to the directorates regarding safe and effective use of medicines and drug expenditure to facilitate service improvement.

Deputise for the lead pharmacist for surgery.

Main duties of the job

Performing and overseeing the monitoring and review of drug therapy for inpatients and outpatients under the care of surgical directorates, ensuring drug treatments are appropriate and comply with current legislation and Trust policies and ensuring good and efficient working relationships between ward and departments and pharmacy supply services.

Ensuring that pharmaceutical knowledge and skills are applied through accurate medicines reconciliation on admission and discharge, optimisation during admission and input to the discharge process at ward level.

Responsible for pharmaceutical advice on specialist areas of practice to consultant and junior and medical staff, general practitioners, nursing staff pharmacy staff, other healthcare professionals, and patients and carers. This will include evaluating data where information is sparse or lacking or where opinions differ and formulating a reasoned approach based on professional judgement.

Working with medical staffs to formulate medicine policies and guidelines that promote rational and economical prescribing. Monitoring practice to ensure policies and guidelines are adhered to.
