Overview

Advanced Clinical Practitioner – Department: Emergency Department. Band 8A. Hours: 37.5 per week on a rota including early, lates, twilights and night shifts. All MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working.

Are you ready to lead, innovate, and deliver exceptional care in a fast-paced clinical environment? #TeamMKUH have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join our Emergency Department.

As an ACP, you’ll manage the full patient journey—from initial assessment to diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation. You’ll work within a multi-professional framework, making complex decisions with confidence, compassion and care. Additionally, you will organise complex care planning and follow ups, including discharge planning and referrals to another services/organisation. You should have excellent interpersonal skills, resilience, emotional intelligence, and a professional manner, and be able to prioritise and organise your workload and work under pressure. Furthermore, the successful candidate will collaborate across our internal and external partners, including medical and nursing teams, allied health professionals, social care, and urgent care providers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive clinical assessment.
  • Request, perform, interpret, and follow up on diagnostics tests to support clinical decision making.
  • Make decisions with confidence, competence and drawing on clinical expertise.
  • Organise complex care planning and follow ups, including discharge planning and referrals to other services/organisations.
  • Communicate with and take the views of the patients/relatives and carers on board to ensure that informed consent is obtained prior to investigations and or treatment.
  • Act as a proactive clinical leader, demonstrating effective leadership skills.
  • Promote best practice for patients using standards, clinical guidelines, and research/audit findings.
  • Develop and lead service improvement, utilising the transformation and quality improvement agenda.
  • Act as a resource in providing clinical leadership and advice to other teams and organisations, sharing knowledge and expertise.
  • Undertake statutory and mandatory training as required by the Trust.
  • Participate in the theoretical and clinical education and training of others.
  • Develop and maintain a positive learning environment for the team and ensure developmental requirements are addressed.
  • Ensure that own skills and competence are regularly updated in light of research, audit, and knowledge.
  • Be confident in the delivery of multi-professional education and training.
  • Assist in data collection for local, national, and multi-centre research projects.
  • Identify areas for research and audit, liaising with the research and audit teams; analyse findings and interpret for practice changes.
  • Prepare and present reports on audit and research to the multi-disciplinary team and or corporate team.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • The role is underpinned by a master’s level award or equivalent that encompasses the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research, with core capabilities and area specific clinical competence.
  • Advanced clinical practice entails a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making, including prescribing medicines within professional boundaries.
  • Ability to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families, and carers, with the ability to analyse and synthesize complex problems across settings to enhance patient experience and outcomes.
  • Must be able to work a 7-day pattern with some shifts and out-of-hours work to meet service needs.
