The opportunity

We are a team of 35 that provides actuarial support to the International organisation, covering multiple geographical locations. The team is mainly based in London, but can operate remotely or at other offices. We interact with almost all of the other departments based in London as well as colleagues in the US and in other worldwide locations. We travel as necessary, particularly for office visits and conferences (both internally and externally).

Responsibilities

• Provide strong technical and operational support to the product team responsible for the PFR and Europe underwriting divisions, specifically:
  • large account pricing, pricing tool validation
  • business planning and capital model parameterisation
  • quarterly best estimate reserving
  • annual regulatory reporting
• Maintain strong relations with the underwriting teams, providing challenge and support in pricing and reserving activities.
• Own various core processes to produce deliverables for external purposes.
• Provide support to the wider Markel International Actuarial team.

Our must-haves

• Be able to engage multiple stakeholders and create effective relationships with other departments, including Finance, Underwriting, Claims, etc.
• Effectively work within a team, including prioritising your own workload.
• Be familiar with actuarial disciplines relating to pricing or reserving (both would be a bonus)
• Have some experience of engaging with underwriters or other stakeholders in presenting results
• Be aware of the actuarial elements of business planning and parameterisation of underwriting and reserve risk.
• Be present in the London office at least two days a week and be prepared to visit European offices if necessary.
