Overview
The Finance team provides financial services and advice to the Environment and Markets departments. The department offers an apprentice a good range of introductory experience while contributing to helping the team meet shortening deadlines and growing demand.
Responsibilities
- Raise Accounts Receivable (AR) invoices, credit notes and journals and recover monies due to the City of London in respect of work conducted on behalf of statutory undertakings, private individuals and businesses, using Oracle.
- Proactively chase aged debts as directed by the Senior Accountant - Accounts Receivable and assist in completing the monthly debt reports.
- Raise queries to debtors in writing and deal with follow-up correspondence.
- Collate and pay to the City of London's appointed banker's cash, and cheques received in respect of debtors' invoices and other sources.
- Collate customer information and request new customers to be set up within CBIS.
- Consult with the Cashiers Department to ensure accurate and timely allocation of BACs, CHAPS and other online payments.
- Answer enquiries from AR customers about amounts due, by reference to the City's financial accounting system (Oracle).
- Answer enquiries from staff about financial coding by using the Corporation's computerised accounting system (Oracle).
- Review and process payment requisitions regarding sundry invoices paid via WorldPay and ensure the accurate allocation of funds.
- Actively seek to implement the City of London's Equal Opportunity Policy and promote equality of opportunity in relation to duties of the post.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade as required.
- Actively seek to implement the City of London's Occupational Health and Safety Policy and consider health and safety for self and others when performing duties.
- Use the organisation's standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues such as reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
- Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
- Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
- Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon and tailoring language to the audience and media, with awareness of risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
- Use finance and accounting software packages to input and manage data for routine accounting tasks.
- Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, including backing up data.
- Record transactional data.
Qualifications and Training
- You will be supported to achieve the Accounts Assistant level 2 apprenticeship. Theoretical training will be delivered by the training provider on a weekly basis. Practical training and support will be provided in the workplace, allowing you to embed learning in the working environment. You will receive 6 hours per week to complete coursework within your working hours.

Salary and Benefits

Role Details
Contract: Training apprenticeship (Accounts or Finance Assistant, Level 2). Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:15am – 5:00pm core hours. Flexibility will be required for business needs. 35 hours per week. Start date: Monday 1 December 2025. Duration: 1 year 3 months.
