For our Communications Group, we are looking for a Student Assistant at the Lighthouse Visitor Centre at European XFEL. The centre informs visitors about the facility and its research. The Xcool Lab within the Lighthouse offers extracurricular education with two school labs: one for Physics and one for Molecular Biology. School classes visit for one day, attending courses from around 9 am to 3/4:30 pm, performing experiments, presenting results, and discussing science.

The Student Assistant will work one full day per week and will:

• Work as a tutor in the Xcool Lab, collaborating with teaching and outreach staff
• Prepare experiments before lab days
• Teach, supervise, and support students in molecular biology and biochemistry experiments
• Assist in summarizing and discussing experimental results
• Ensure a safe working environment under supervision
• Contribute to the development of educational materials and experiments
• Assist with outreach programs, events, and at the Lighthouse information desk

Qualifications include:

• Currently studying towards a Bachelor or Master in Biology, Molecular Biosciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, or related fields. Courses aimed at future teachers are an advantage but not mandatory.
• Practical laboratory experience with techniques such as PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme digests
• Additional skills like UV-visible spectrophotometry, bacterial transformations, DNA extraction, bioinformatics tools, sequence analysis, primer design, or structural biology are assets
• Ability to communicate molecular biology and biochemistry concepts clearly
• Organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team, with a sense of responsibility
• Fluency in German and working knowledge of English
