Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the Project " Ultrafast and atomic-scale functional control of matter " within the Cluster of Excellence "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter" in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG). The position begins on 01 February 2026.

It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for a part-time position with 75% of standard working hours per week.

Responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

We are opening a new Research Associate position in the attosecond science team at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) in Hamburg. In the CFEL-ATTO group, we develop advanced attosecond technology to track and control electron dynamics in matter. Our approach enables real-time observation of electronic processes and manipulation of properties at the atomic scale. The Research Associate will conduct experiments combining tunable few-femtosecond UV-vis and attosecond soft X-ray pulses with liquid jet technology, as well as measurements at large-scale facilities to control matter’s functionality with laser light.

Specific Requirements
  • a university degree in a relevant field, mainly a Master’s degree in physics, chemistry, or materials science.
  • experience with lasers and/or spectroscopy approaches.
  • experimental skills and interest in instrumentation development.
  • excellent knowledge of English.
  • the ability to work as part of a team.
  • commitment, motivation, and willingness to learn are valued more than prior specialization in all areas.
