Jobbeschreibung
PhD - Multiscale Operando Super‑Resolution Imaging of Water Imbibition

Job ID: 923

Location: Rostock

Join the Cluster of Excellence "BlueMat: Water‑Driven Materials" (www.tuhh.de/blu) and contribute to one of Europe’s most exciting research initiatives. Collaborate with a dynamic, interdisciplinary team that combines science, sustainability, and technology to create a better future. Help shape the next generation of sustainable materials inspired by nature’s most powerful resource: water.

For the Institute of Metallic Biomaterials, Helmholtz‑Zentrum Hereon for February 1st 2026 we are looking for a PhD - Multiscale Operando Super‑Resolution Imaging of Water Imbibition. The position is fixed‑term until 31 January 2029.

The BlueMat project ‘Multiscale Operando Super‑Resolution Imaging of Water Imbibition in Hierarchically Porous Materials’ aims to establish methods for super‑resolution imaging using deep learning. You will study the water imbibition in hierarchically porous Si‑based material systems across multiple length and time scales. These systems can manipulate fluid transport through the tailoring of their porosity. To assess these phenomena and understand the underlying mechanisms, it is critical to use multiscale X‑ray and electron imaging.

Your tasks

Your responsibilities include:

  • characterize fluid transport phenomena such as velocity and homogeneity in hierarchically porous Si‑based materials
  • conduct multiscale imaging using MHz X‑ray projection imaging, X‑ray micro‑ and nano‑computed tomography, and scanning electron microscopy
  • design and implement deep learning models to enhance resolution of large field‑of‑view imaging techniques
  • integrate imaging data across modalities for improved spatial resolution and quantitative analysis
  • collaborate closely with both experimental and computational teams to interpret results
Your profile
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, materials science, computer science or a related discipline
  • background in one or more of the following areas is desired: X‑ray or electron imaging techniques, and image processing
  • proficiency in programming languages such as Python and experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) is highly desirable
  • strong interest in interdisciplinary research combining imaging, machine learning, and porous materials
  • strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team
  • excellent communication skills in English
  • willingness to travel regularly between Rostock and Hamburg (DESY)
We offer you
  • an exciting interdisciplinary research environment within the BlueMat Cluster of Excellence
  • access to state‑of‑the‑art imaging facilities and high‑performance computing resources
  • participation in international conferences, research stays, and collaborative networks
  • collaboration with leading experts in imaging, modeling, and materials science
  • opportunities for professional development and networking within the Helmholtz Association
  • flexible working hours and family‑friendly policies

Inclusive excellence drives better science. We actively seek female and international researchers from all walks of life, valuing non‑linear careers and diverse perspectives across cultures, disciplines, and identities.

If you have questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Berit Zeller‑Plumhoff at berit.zeller-plumhoff@hereon.de.

Severely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

Interested? We are looking forward to receiving your application until December 18th 2025.
