Job summary

A local government organization in Richmond Hill seeks a Camp Supervisor for a Challenge Course. The ideal candidate will develop and oversee camp programming, ensuring safety and support for staff and participants. Position Summary

Reporting to the Program Corrdinator, the Challenge Course Camp Supervisor will plan and develop day-to-day programming and a high and low ropes challenge course camp program. They will supervise the Camp Counsellors and volunteers working in the program and provide ongoing direction, supervision and evaluations. The Camp Supervisor will assist the Program Coordinator and Camp Directors in establishing and implementing the annual orientation for Camp Counsellors. The Camp Supervisor will be responsible for ordering supplies and equipment and completing administrative duties. They will be responsible for the overall supervision of the activities and participants while the challenge course is in operation, as well as ensuring that all policies and procedures are followed during operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop the day-to-day programming for a specific Camp Program that meets the children’s age and developmental abilities.
  • Modify camp programming to ensure campers with disabilities are able to participate in programs and be fully integrated into the camp setting.
  • Perform pre and post-use inspections of all equipment and course elements
  • Prepare, maintain and tear-down of program equipment
  • Ensure facility and course elements are left in an organized, safe and tidy manner
  • Ensure there are a variety of activities in the camp program that targets the specific genre of the camp.
  • Develop resource material for the Camp Counsellors to assist them in delivering the various activities in the program.
  • Provide ongoing supervision and evaluation of the Camp Counsellors.
  • Ensure camp ratios are met at all times.
  • Work with the Camp Volunteers to ensure they are included in the programs and have various responsibilities.
  • Communicate and interact with participants and make everyone feel welcome
  • Inform the Program Coordinator of any issues that need resolving and of any recommendations related to equipment and course elements
  • Provide overall supervision of the course and staff
  • Take the lead on responding to emergency situations
  • Ensure camper safety and security throughout the day.
  • Assist in the implementation of camp training
  • Ensure the camp staff payroll is completed and submitted to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Complete all necessary forms (accident, incident) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Represent the City of Richmond Hill by presenting yourself in a cooperative, organized, enthusiastic and well-groomed manner.
  • Report to work promptly.
  • Wear assigned uniform and name tag.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and staff training sessions.
  • Know and understand the policies and procedures of the Community Services Department.
  • Maintain excellent public relations at all time, with staff and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • Minimum Level 1 Challenge Course Practitioner Certification or must obtain one before hire
  • High Five PHCD Certification
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Previous experience in facilitating large and small groups, and in briefing/debriefing
  • Experience in planning and tailoring adventure experiences to specific group goals
  • Must participate in the City’s on site ropes training; Date TBD
  • Previous experience in facilitating high and low ropes course elements and climbing walls is preferred, but specific on site training will be provided to hired staff
  • Previous experience in a day camp setting, supervising staff and dealing directly with the public.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization and administrative skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required. Must be comfortable speaking to and leading participants of diverse backgrounds and abilities, ranging in age from 6 years to adult/senior
  • Physical demands of the job include: walking, standing for long periods of time, carrying equipment, pushing and/or pulling, climbing, balancing and working outdoors in all types of weather
  • Must have a high degree of safety awareness
  • Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of service, collaboration, care and courage
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, and have access to a vehicle for use on corporate business (mileage compensated) and will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance upon hire
  • Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
