Job description
Volunteer Coordinator - Wild Horses of Alberta Society

Ongoing

Location: Near Sundre, Alberta (on-site + remote coordination)
Commitment: Part-time, volunteer role (flexible hours)

Wild Horses of Alberta Society is a grassroots, volunteer-powered nonprofit dedicated to the humane care, rehabilitation, and advocacy of Alberta’s wild horses. We work on the ground, in all seasons, with people who believe good stewardship is built on respect, patience, and long-term thinking.

Our volunteers are our backbone—and we’re ready for someone to help lead and support them.

The Role

The Volunteer Coordinator is the calm centre of the volunteer universe. You’ll recruit, organize, communicate with, and support a diverse group of volunteers—from horse-experienced folks to people who simply want to help where they can. You don’t need to know anything about horses. You do need to like people, systems, and gentle chaos.

What You’ll Do
  • Recruit and onboard new volunteers
  • Maintain volunteer schedules, contact lists, and roles
  • Act as the main point of contact for volunteer questions and coordination
  • Support volunteer orientations and occasional training sessions
  • Help match volunteers’ skills and availability with organizational needs
  • Communicate clearly, kindly, and consistently (email, messaging, occasional calls)
  • Work closely with the WHOAS board and site leads to anticipate volunteer needs
You Might Be a Great Fit If You…
  • Are organized, reliable, and good at follow-through
  • Communicate well and enjoy supporting others
  • Are comfortable coordinating volunteers with different backgrounds and availability
Nice-to-Haves (Not Required)
  • Experience coordinating volunteers or working with nonprofits
  • Familiarity with basic tools like Google Docs, spreadsheets, or volunteer connector
  • Comfort around horses or outdoor environments
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
What You’ll Get
  • A meaningful role in a respected Alberta nonprofit
  • Real impact on animal welfare and community education
  • Flexibility and autonomy
  • Deep appreciation (and likely some good horse stories)
  • The quiet satisfaction of making a complex operation run more smoothly
